Review of Railway Cottage

Railway Cottage
Ranked #58 of 97 Restaurants in Malton
Description: Welcome to an insight of the Marishes a small area located between Malton and Pickering, NorthYorkshire offering beautiful scenery and quiet country roads to cycle on. A perfect peaceful retreat to stop and refresh yourself before completing your cycle ride or walk in beautiful North Yorkshire! The Malton to Pickering railway was discontinued in late 1960's and properties along the track are now in private ownership inc our lovely gatehouse home which we have lovingly spent the last 8 years restoring to its former glory. We were approached by a local cycling shop to ask if cyclists could call and refresh themselves during their ride so we opened up as a small tearoom offering a hot drink and homemade cake to passing cyclists for the first time in 2015 - the response has been amazing and we have a number of regulars especially from the Scarborough area. We offer quality, home baking (most award winning entries from local agricultural shows), and as much tea/coffee and other beverages that you can drink! We also cater for gluten free visitors too although these treats are not home baked. We welcome individual cyclists/walkers and group bookings. If you intend to visit with a group, please visit our Facebook page and contact with 48 hrs notice. New for 2017 are loyalty cards for regular visitors, a working model railway in a converted shed and basic equipment and replacement inner tubes etc for any punctures! The Marishes is part of a conservation project and to encourage birds of prey, you may well spot the boxes strategically placed in the wooded areas along the track to encourage nesting. We regularly see buzzards, kestrels and barn owls in the area and if your an early morning cyclist you may well be lucky enough to see the wild deer that habitat the area as well as the pheasants, hares, rabbits and their enemy, Mr Fox At railway cottage there is an abundance of birds to keep you entertained inc our resident pair of woodpeckers. So here's hoping you will plan your next excursion to include a visit to our home. We promise you a warm welcome!

The owners of this coffee stop are wonderfully accommodating. There’s no better place to stop for coffee & cake whilst out on a cycle ride. Relax In their beautiful garden. Top marks.

This is the most enterprising concern I have ever come across. The proprietor is so kind and generous and has the fantastic skill of making superb cakes and scones. Horrified to find the last reviewer a frustrated car user, slagging the place off! This should not be allowed.
We love what you do Dea. Please don't let this deter you from your fantastic enterprise

Thank you so very much, Mary for your raving review! I shared the comments from Steve B on our Facebook page and the response has been amazing! I hope this reviewer takes the time to log on to our Facebook page and read cyclists/ramblers posts (although I suspect if he was a user of Facebook, he would of done his homework first and realised we are a car free zone)

After a sweltering first part of our bike ride, we were greeted by Dea and her husband with a lovely warm smile and a refreshing jug of home made Elderflower juice. Followed by endless tea and coffee and home made cakes, beautiful fresh scones with home grown strawberries. All I kept thinking was 'this is so Dreamy and idyllic ' as I watched the chickens and ducks go about their daily lives. Just sublime...all rested and refreshed we set off for the second part of our cyle ride. This place is a must for cyclists and walkers alike. Thank you

Helen and Jai

Really warm and friendly welcome at this recently restored railway crossing cottage. Lovely restful garden with as much tea as we could drink and fantastic homemade baking. The Marishes road has always seemed unnaturally long...not any longer! Excellent value. Will certainly be back. Many thanks.

We happened upon Railway Cottage whilst cycling home from Scarborough. It is a restored railway building on the site of a former level crossing. We had excellent tea and cakes in their lovely garden. Great ambience with old railway signs etc, delightful hosts, excellent food and great value. Highly recommended
