“Very nice place to visit”

Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest
Ranked #11 of 40 things to do in Diani Beach
Attraction details
Reviewed 7 April 2017

We visited the forest by walking from the Sonrisa hotel at Diani (1km aproxim).
The person who welcomed us explained the overall forest rule and then we proceed to follow him. The park entrance is 2000ksh (ner 20 Usd) pero person, who we found pricy.
The place is really nice and it is very interesting to see all the dead coral around the forest, also the different type of trees and medicine plants.
We did the shot walk as we arrived at 16hs as it was hot, but the guide told us there is a longer walk so you should probably plan in advance the time to go. Also, have in mind that around 6pm all the mosquitos start to fly around so wear repellent.
Be careful also when walking as it is mandatory to wear a kind of black fabric they provide and you wrapped around the waist, so you can get stuck and fall if you do not pay attention to the path (there are a lot of leaves, branches, roots, coral and so all over the way).
We had also saw some monkey families around.

Great guided tour through the forest. But call and prebook or no guides may be there. Avoid midday heat and go in the morning or late afternoon. Takes 1.5 hours.

Me and my boyfriend called the number on the Kaya Kinondo website the day before to arrange transport there. Otherwise, I'm sure you can get a taxi from your hotel.
We got there and were received by the guide who explained us a little bit more about the history of the forest. We then had a 1h guided tour of the sacred forest where the guide explained us a little bit more about the people who lived there and their culture and rituals. It was very worth going here, as we felt like we learned a little bit more about the true culture of the tribes that live in the coast of Kenya.

This is special forest which can only be visited with a guide. it is better to phone ahead to confirm there is one there especially if you want to go early while it is cool. Allow 2 hours for a full tour. Better if you don't have mobility problems. Very safe and quite different form the beach attractions. its alittle off the tar road so take a good car or taxi.
