We’ve been regulars at The Red Lion for a number of years. The food is always good, although not excellent, and there’s usually a deal to take advantage of, even if you don’t have Tesco vouchers. Unfortunately, last night was one of the poorer experiences we’ve had at the pub, which is a shame as we were there to celebrate my mum’s birthday.
While the food was very nice, as per usual, the service was well below the usual standards. We waited over ten minutes for our first round of drinks and then my wife and mother had to cancel the white wines they’d ordered with their starter as they hadn’t been delivered by the time they finished their food. We also ordered a jug of water shortly before our starters but didn’t receive it until the mains, after prompting three different waitresses. It was also disappointing not to be told there was no coronation chicken prior to ordering.
We thought we’d have a coffee and liqueur in the bar after eating. However, the barmaid told me there was no decaf coffee or limoncello, and didn’t offer an apology, prompting us to leave. We’ll definitely eat at The Red Lion again, but it was surprising to have such a disappointing meal. The brilliant manager (Rob, I believe) wasn’t working last night, which may be why the service was so poor. Hopefully it’s just a one-off.
