The rooms are clean and have what you need. They do not however look like the pictures on the website. We had unit 9 . It is in need of a coat of paint and new linnen. Ours were torn and the pillows flat and ancient. The bathroom is of very low standard and really needs to be upgraded for the price charged. We do a weekend breakaway every second month. The unit would be fine if the rate charged was lower. I just felt that what we got for what we paid and what we expected based on the photo’s on the website we were left with a sour taste. Not at all like on the photo’s.

The setting with the jacuzzi outside was amazing , with birds singing all day.

Although it rained most of the time, braaing outside was not ideal as it rained into the chimney. No oven , so we had to use the gas cooker top one evening .
We were unable to use the wifi as the line connectivity seems throttled. No restaurant.
We also had car trouble and were unable to travel to get to any restaurants or get more supplies , the owner was so kind as to bring some supplies from the Town.

The fireplace was great inside the cottage and the retreat is highly recommended for its coziness ,quietness and privacy and trails.

My wife and I spent 3 wonderful nights in this pristine environment. What has been done to replant the natural vegetation is commendable, while the accommodation is beyond expectation. So good that we opted out from leaving the farm during our stay and rather hiked the trails around us and enjoyed the jacuzzi with a view.

My husband and I visited Cederberg Retreat last weekend. It was an enjoyable weekend and we felt relaxed after spending two days and two nights relaxing in nature. My low-lights, not much space to put food or clothes, Hi-lights the jacuzzi, the stars and the little birds.

We made a booking with Cederkloof as it is a dog friendly establishment and we wanted to take our dogs with on a short getaway to see how they will cope with travelling.

The pictures on the website convinced us to make a booking.

I need to mention that I am in the hospitality industry and I run two establishments.

We stayed in cottage number 3 and on arrival we realised that it was nothing like the photos on the website. The following was clear from the very beginning:

1) The crede floor of the cottage is in a serious state of disrepair and needs urgent attention.
2) The wooden window frames and doors needs attention. The main door has plenty of wood rod.
3) Inadequate seating outside. The cottage is provided with a small hard bench and two hard chairs that might date out of 1990 for the outside seating area. This is simply not adequate.
4) Insufficient cupboard space as the cupboard consists of 2 shelfs and a rail. For longer stays than a weekend you will have to live out of your suitcase.
5) No storage space in the kitchen for groceries,
6) No oven in the unit as per the website photos.
7) Extremely dirty fittings such as light switches.
8) Loose toilet seat.

Given all the above we still decided to make the best of our stay and intended to enjoy every moment of it.

On the first evening we realised the jacuzzi is prone to flooding the stoep area as the jacuzzi is not level. This also explained the rotten wooden door as all the water floods towards the main entrance door of the cottage. It is clear that this is an ongoing issue.

The second evening we ran out of gas while preparing dinner on the stove top. I went to reception in order to make a call to report it and I was simply told that I had to fetch a gas bottle from an unoccupied cottage. While it is perfectly normal to run out of gas at the most inconvenient of times, this is certainly not the way to deal with it, To expect your guests to run around to find a replacement gas bottle is not acceptable.

While looking for a replacement gas bottle I happened to see the inside of cottage nr 4. This is the cottage that is displayed on the website. So if you make a booking at Cederkloof opt for cottage nr 4 as it seems like the best option. It is clear that this cottage received a much needed makeover and some renovations with the addition of an oven, decent fittings and seating.

Bring extra refuse bags if you stay for longer than a weekend and Doom as the flies can be a bit of a nuisance.

The cellphone reception is extremely limited, but this is not necessarily a bad thing if you intend to have a time-out from your normal everyday life.

Cederkloof has the potential to be so much more and perhaps if the price per night were a little bit cheaper we would not have been so harsh in our rating. Unfortunately we had certain expectations and this contributed to our disappointment.

Room tip: Cottage nr 4 seems the best on face value
