We made a booking with Cederkloof as it is a dog friendly establishment and we wanted to take our dogs with on a short getaway to see how they will cope with travelling.

The pictures on the website convinced us to make a booking.

I need to mention that I am in the hospitality industry and I run two establishments.

We stayed in cottage number 3 and on arrival we realised that it was nothing like the photos on the website. The following was clear from the very beginning:

1) The crede floor of the cottage is in a serious state of disrepair and needs urgent attention.
2) The wooden window frames and doors needs attention. The main door has plenty of wood rod.
3) Inadequate seating outside. The cottage is provided with a small hard bench and two hard chairs that might date out of 1990 for the outside seating area. This is simply not adequate.
4) Insufficient cupboard space as the cupboard consists of 2 shelfs and a rail. For longer stays than a weekend you will have to live out of your suitcase.
5) No storage space in the kitchen for groceries,
6) No oven in the unit as per the website photos.
7) Extremely dirty fittings such as light switches.
8) Loose toilet seat.

Given all the above we still decided to make the best of our stay and intended to enjoy every moment of it.

On the first evening we realised the jacuzzi is prone to flooding the stoep area as the jacuzzi is not level. This also explained the rotten wooden door as all the water floods towards the main entrance door of the cottage. It is clear that this is an ongoing issue.

The second evening we ran out of gas while preparing dinner on the stove top. I went to reception in order to make a call to report it and I was simply told that I had to fetch a gas bottle from an unoccupied cottage. While it is perfectly normal to run out of gas at the most inconvenient of times, this is certainly not the way to deal with it, To expect your guests to run around to find a replacement gas bottle is not acceptable.

While looking for a replacement gas bottle I happened to see the inside of cottage nr 4. This is the cottage that is displayed on the website. So if you make a booking at Cederkloof opt for cottage nr 4 as it seems like the best option. It is clear that this cottage received a much needed makeover and some renovations with the addition of an oven, decent fittings and seating.

Bring extra refuse bags if you stay for longer than a weekend and Doom as the flies can be a bit of a nuisance.

The cellphone reception is extremely limited, but this is not necessarily a bad thing if you intend to have a time-out from your normal everyday life.

Cederkloof has the potential to be so much more and perhaps if the price per night were a little bit cheaper we would not have been so harsh in our rating. Unfortunately we had certain expectations and this contributed to our disappointment.

Room tip: Cottage nr 4 seems the best on face value

We had a lovely stay. We booked especially as it was pet friendly. If I had any criticism it would be to say that it would have been nice if it was possible to have a gate on deck for pets. We were chased up the drive by two dogs on arrival and had to barricade the balcony to keep our dogs safe. It's pet friendly but not pet safe. Having been to several pet friendly resorts, they have all had a section that was enclosed. Couldn't relax 100% because of being chased by the strange dogs on arrival.

What can I say - from the turnoff to the Retreat we already knew we were in a very special place. Citrus orchards and beautifully kept natural vegetation. Hearty welcome by Yvette (co-owner). The accommodation is neat, tidy and well equipped with extra surprise like fresh organic rooibos tea and fresh coffee beans with grinder and plunger. Our jacuzzi was switched on prior to our arrival so we could immediately start relaxing and enjoy the fynbos surrounds. Private and quiet with only the sound of birds and nature. The natural spring water is an added bonus - crystal clear and healthy. There is just too much to mention and we are looking forward to our next visit. Thank you Yvette, Anja (resort manager and a stunning person) and staff for a memorable stay

Room tip: All cottages are very private. Sheer luxury at affordable price

Had a fantastic time. Although the temperatures exceeded 35C on each of the days the chalet was cool with the air con and closing of the curtains.
A few issues...there is no curtain in the Kitchen - causes temp to rise drastically in pm. The overflow from the jacuzzi flows down to the swing doors on the bedroom. Doors are rotting and the wall is beginning to have a damp problem. The fridge took a long time to get a bit cold even on max setting. The braai was a bit low for us older persons. Lastly the ground to the north of the chalet is been cleaned out but the refuse and junk in there goes totally against your motto of environmentally friendly. There is even a dump towards the river, out of site but and environmental hazard.
Due to Covid no service understandable. We had a fantastic relaxing time and would go again in an instant. Thanks for the coffee and the Rooibost tea. Keep,up the good work.

The retreat is situated in a beautiful area, close enough to Citrusdal to be convenient and far enough to unwind. The cottage we stayed in (no 6) was very private and equipped with everything we needed. The view from the cottage is stunning and we spent several wonderful hours relaxing in the jacuzzi and admiring the view of the mountains and fynbos. We did both hiking trails and although rather challenging, we can highly recommend it.

Room tip: Cottage no 6 was very private and had great views
