“Beautiful setting. Perfect holiday retreat.”

We normally stay elsewhere on the island but other members of the family had filled that option already. Staying at Loch Portain was a great experience for us and one that we would be very happy to repeat. Communication throughout was excellent. The house was well appointed for Uist and made a brilliant base. We were blessed with outstanding weather but whatever conditions the panorama from the main windows looking out over the Loch were simply marvellous. The house coped well with everything but as you should expect on Uist be willing to do without mobile and internet most of the time. Midges were out in force but to be expected with such great weather. We took our own Nespresso machine which added to the comfort factor but otherwise much fun was had by all including the shortest ever game of Cluedo. The drive from the main road is longer than you might think but you quickly get used to it and it brings its own joys with an outstanding display of heather when we were there and brilliant wildlife sightings along the way. Would happily recommend to all and hope to return.

Couldnt believe how comfortable, well appointed and beautifully situated the house was! Spectacular views to be seen through large picture windows in the living room.. It was also quite near to the Ferry (only about 8 miles) and there was a store at Lochmaddy where we found all the basics we needed. The hotel there was also very convenient for the occasional meal after a day's outing. We would recommend the Stornoway black pudding fritters! Delicious! We were sorry to leave having thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to be back some day. Saw golden eagles and deer........but sadly no otters or seals!...maybe next time!!

“A breathtaking retreat!”

We stayed at Loch Portain for a week in August 2015 and were vastly impressed by the beautifully situated accomadation. It has recently been renovated to a high standard and superbly equipped to cater for your holiday in the magical islands of the Hebrides. It was quite something to wake up every morning to the awe-inspiring view enhanced by the panoramic view offered from the kitchen. It also affords you to see the wildlife, including white tailed eagles. Words can not describe how idyllic this place is and how it offers true beauty and relaxation. One could easily believe themselves to be witnessing the views Brontë vividly described in 'Wuthering Height'.

We visited huge white sandy beaches, nature reserves, ancient monuments and the local villages. We often had the beaches to ourselves. It is perfectly situated as quite close to Lochmaddy which offers wifi and delicious food. North Uist is really a hidden gem and a perfect place for an adventure.

We left feeling totally relaxed and refreshed. We had a fabulous time and hope to come back soon. I would recommend this place to anyone in a heartbeat as nothing can surpass these views or having a cosy night infront of the peat fire.

“Perfect !”

Loch Portain House is perfectly situated above a quiet remote loch on the East side of the Island some 6 miles from Lochmaddy.
Particular care has been made to ensure that everything is there for your perfect stay whether it be summer or winter.....the peat fire along with the stunning views over the water make for a romantic break or a cosy stay. There has been great care taken by the owner to ensure that it is like a home from home. I cannot think of anything more that could be done here and I hope to return there in Winter when the weather will be dramatic. The only thing I would say is that you need to make sure you have plenty supplies when you are staying there as the local shop in Lochmaddy is basic but ample.
I enjoyed my stay tremendously. Thank you
