“Perfect Location Beautiful House ”
Reviewed 10 October 2016 for a stay in June 2016

The great escape is a beautiful home. We visited with my two children and mother. The home has stairs to enter and a flight of stairs to reach the top two bedrooms, including the master. We were allowed to chose the two rooms we wanted to rent and the third was locked. There are no ramps, so if you are traveling with someone with disabilities, I would advise against it.

The house was comfortable and clean, with the exception of the kitchen. There was old spices, food items such as condiments etc many of which were expired. The napkins for the table and foil, saran wrap etc has little larvae in them. While it is probably nice to have these things when in a pinch, it does cause cleanliness issues. The kitchen has many gadgets and items. Some again are old and not useable. Would recommend the kitchen be cleaned out.

The couches in the living room were made of wicker and not very comfortable. Also the pictures are of a staged home, very similar, but they made the home look slightly better.

Would I stay there again? Absolutely! We loved the location...literally a 15 second walk to the lower public dock. We rented bikes as the island was out of golf carts. I highly recommend you rent a golf cart early and use it. It is nice to travel around the island in. You cannot park it at the house, you have to park it at the post office dock and that is about a 5 to 10 minute walk. Not easy with a baby, so bring a stroller. Some rentals give you a key that allows you to bring the golf cart back to properties, would rquest the owners do this if possible. My mother was older and could not ride a bike, so we could not walk long distances with her, same with the baby.

There are two grocery stores very close and a coffee shop. The store on the shore has veggies and fruit and most of the major items. Also the store on the main island, Maxwell's, also delivers which is much nicer then lugging tons of groceries over.

The home was beautiful. We enjoyed being on the front porch and the decks. There is a basketball court right in front and my son played with the locals and loved it. They were really welcoming. There is no pool, but you can go to the marina restaurant and eat there and swim there. The beach is 5 minutes from the home.

The beds were clean and nice as were the bathrooms. The managers were very nice. Wi-Fi worked and there also was a phone. There were plenty of beach items and beach towels, bags and coolers. The home had lots of extras. One thing of note...under the home are two huge water tanks. Water is very precious and scarce. If you use all that water, you will get charged for a refill. We did not use it all, but we were really worried we would run out.

Recommend renting a boat to travel to all the islands. There are maps in the home and all kind of extras that will help you navigate. The owners come and pick you up from the dock to take all the items to your home...but you still have to lug suitcases up the stairs. The yard is dirt and grass so you can't roll them either.

Overall, you will love it. We certainly did!

My husband, 3 year old child, and I had the best family holiday to date at the gorgeous Great Escape!

The house is perfectly located in Hope Town, only a few minutes walk from a wonderful coffee shop, grocery stores, water front restaurants, bars, and the beaches. We hired bikes for the duration of our visit, and it was a great and very easy way to see the island.

The Great Escape is beautifully presented, extremely comfortable and very well equipped for a relaxed break, soaking up the sunshine and and laid-back Bahamian vibe!

The Great Escape is a gorgeous house situated perfectly a few minutes stroll from the beach and all the amenities of Hopetown. Really enjoyed the beachy-decor of the house, which had everything necessary for entertaining ourselves at home (including WIFI better than home!). The owner pointed us to lovely spots around the island for dining, cocktails, coffee and enjoying the sand and surf. New Year's Eve on the island was a highlight - the residents truly make an effort to put on a great party and fireworks display. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a private, chilled-out escape to the beautiful Bahamas.

Another great stay at the Great Escape - it felt like coming home. The owners, Ingrid and Kirsten, are lovely and went out of their way to make sure we felt welcomed, introducing us to locals and giving us inside knowledge of the events going on.

Lots to do for the 4 of us - beaching, dancing, snorkeling, and lots of cocktails. As I mentioned in my last review, the house is spacious, bright, airy, well equipped, and well located to beaches and bars. Loved having my morning coffee on the large deck. Ingrid and Kirsten are easy to deal with and extremely straight forward.

I'm very surprised to read the negative review as this was not at all our experience. I highly recommend staying and look forward to returning ourselves next year.

The house, aesthetically, is exactly as advertised. The amenities are mostly, as well- although, the wireless did not work at all and nor did the stove. The location is nice and within walking distance of beaches and the small town.

That being said, when we arrived they changed the price of the rental (we pre-paid) and came by every day to demand more money- in cash.

I would avoid this place just to avoid the scam.

Management Response

We are very sorry that you had issues during your stay at The Great Escape. We will try to make the information about the third bedroom clearer for guests in the future. As stated in the information on Flipkey, the price for the week includes the two double bedrooms, but the third bedroom can be unlocked for a small extra amount. This should have occurred at the time of booking, apologies that it did not happen for your booking. It was certainly not a scam, as the information about the third bedroom is provided on Flipkey.

Being on island, we do occasionally have issues with the wifi. We try to get this resolved as soon as we can, apologies that this was not possible during your short stay. The stove has been fixed - thanks for alerting us to this problem.

Again, we are sorry that you felt the need to warn others about The Great Escape. We love this beautiful house and really want to share it with others who visit Hope Town and Elbow Cay.
