Decided to visit this restaurant to try their tagine (with prunes and almonds) and we were not disappointed. The food was superb and the wine list which included a number of african wines was excellent value for money. The only disappointment was that we were the only diners which meant that despite the heroic efforts of the owner there was very little atmosphere. However we will certainly return as the food was excellent.

Closed on monday so we revisited on thursday. Ordered couscous royale chicken tagine and lamb tagine. That was plenty for a family of four. Good service, the waiter spoke good english, used to live in oxford. If you want pastilla you need to order in advance.

We had dinner here twice during a stay at a nearby hotel; it was the first experience eating maroccan for us both. The service at this restaurant is top notch, the host/waiter (it was the same person both times) speaks excellent english (such a rarity in France, alas!), and is very friendly and hospitable. It was very pleasant to be recognized on our second visit and to be greated warmly. The food, however... We agree with a previous review, it lacks spices, even salt. If you arrive expecting strong flavors, you will be disappointed. The tagine with lamb I had on one of the visits was very nice, however, and the frozen desserts are very apt and refreshing after the meal together with the excellent café maison. Overall, we had two very pleasant dinners at this restaurant and we only wish the chef would use his spice rack a bit more daringly...

This restaurant has recently opened, and brings some welcome variety to the admittedly superb restaurant food of the Vienne valley. Soleil de Marrakech describes itself as serving Moroccan specialities, but the influences are from across the whole Maghreb.

Tempting though the starters were (they offer pastillas, the little crispy sweet and sour pastries that are so delectable), we went for main courses and pudding only. It was a good choice. Mains are simple – variations on tagine and couscous. We ordered a couscous royale, and a 7-vegetable lamb tagine. Both portions were enormous. To be honest, we could easily have shared one between the two of us.

The tagine was good: beautifully spiced, with plenty of succulent lamb, and fresh vegetables cooked just so. But the couscous was the star of the show. The couscous itself was light and fluffy. The sauce was hot with peppers but also tangy with spices. With it came chicken kebab, roast chicken, a lamb chop, and merguez. Oh, and of course chick peas, pickled sultanas, and harissa.

Puddings are standard enough – fruit salads, ices, cafe liegois. They’re a good refreshing way to follow the couscous. They also do a very genuine Moroccan mint tea, and a super strong coffee to end the meal.

I've rated this as a "best meal" not because it compares with Michelin-starred fine dining, but because of the authenticity of the food and the friendliness and ambience of the restaurant.

Prices are very reasonable. At the time of writing (mid-2014), main courses are typically 14 to 17 Euros.

Service was excellent. Soleil de Marrakech deserves to succeed. We’ll certainly go back again.
