“Villa Makambu as good as it gets!”
Reviewed 30 March 2016 for a stay in February 2016

Some things you should know about Villa Makambu:

The photos you see here look great. But they don't do justice to the reality of the place, which is even more impressive. The views are spectacular, the Villa's design is thoughtfully laid out, the furnishings are attractive and comfortable, it's equipped to make you feel right at home (if home for you happens to be situated in paradise).

But the people of Villa Makambu are really its greatest asset. The owners, Pascale and Franz, are lovely folks -- fun, easygoing, comprehensively knowledgable after nearly twenty years on the island, entirely helpful and dedicated to providing the best possible experience for their guests. Should they happen not to be there during your visit, their friends and fellow local innkeepers Josee and Pierre step in to make sure that guests are similarly well taken care of. Always on hand are the amazing Carlos, the Villa's Man of All Seasons, and wonderful Miranda, who thoroughly cleans each of the units every three days.

St. Lucia is dramatically beautiful and the Lucian people in general are welcoming and helpful to visitors. Although life is a struggle for many of them, there's an air of basic civility and generosity which unfortunately can't be said of some other Caribbean destinations. Marigot Bay is ideally located in the functional center of the island, within easy reach of most attractions, and yet comfortably removed from the hubbub that attends cruise ship disgorgements and the swarms of funsters from the island's numerous more northerly resorts.

If you want a predictable, low-impact, white-bread, for-god's-sake-don't-set-foot-off-the-grounds sort of Caribbean vacation, there are plenty of suitable options on St. Lucia and elsewhere to choose from.

But if your idea of a good time is sitting on your veranda enjoying a panoramic view of one of the sweetest protected harbors in the Caribbean, maybe taking an occasional cooling dip in the saltwater pool, maybe letting Captain Carlos take you out in his boat for a day on the water that includes snorkeling at his secret underwater forest of shimmering coral, maybe taking in a happy-hour sunset from the bayside dock at Chateau Mygo down the hill, maybe taking a half-hour drive to the capital, Castries, to hit the open air market or to buy the freshest mahi-mahi or yellowfin by the side of the road where Carlos told you the day-boat fishermen sell their catch, Villa Makambu may be right up your alley.

A couple of points in response to other comments left here -- after nearly six weeks over two years as guests at this villa, we've never experienced any issues whatsoever with the plumbing or water supply. Outside the Villa, we tend to stick with bottled liquids out of an abundance of caution but at Makambu we drink the tap water, we use it for cooking and to make coffee and tea and we've never had a reason to regret it.

For us, it's hard to imagine a better Caribbean vacation experience. That's why we keep coming back. There's just no reason to roll the dice on anyplace else.

“the perfect place to stay in St Lucia!”

I could not recommend this villa enough! We spent two weeks in Nov/Dec 2015, the villa is in the perfect location to explore the island, but you will need a car to get around.

We rented one for part of our stay but Carlos the lovely grounds keeper is more than happy to run you down to the shop if needed (he also makes excellent fish fritters!!)

The villa itself is stunning with beautiful views overlooking Marigot bay - we stayed in the upper level which is beautiful and spacious with huge comfy beds, huge showers and fully equipped kitchen. The pool is just lovely, the perfect place to spend relaxing with a cocktail.

Pascale (the owner) was so lovely and helpful pointing us in the right direction to all the must sees of St Lucia.

Our favourite memory would have to be our day out on Carlos' boat so if you get the chance go! Such an amazing way to see the island.

We truly felt safe and well looked after and we're already dreaming of when we can return to Villa Makambu

Thank you again Pascale and your team! Hopefully we will get to stay with you again soon

:)

“Stylish Villa, with superb views of Marigot Bay”
Reviewed 22 September 2015 for a stay in July 2014

Our family stayed at Villa Makambu last July for two weeks and we had a lovely time. Nestled amongst hills overlooking Marigot Bay, Villa Makumba is a beautifully designed villa on two levels, with stylish interiors and a super pool surrounded by tropical plants and palms. Pascale, Carlos and Franz really enhanced our holiday experience, providing lots of advice about where to go, what to see, where to eat etc as well as being great fun to be with on some exciting holiday adventures like swimming in waterfalls in the rainforest, exploring the vibrant Castries market and drinking exotic cocktails overlooking beautiful Marigot Bay. They are fun people with a love of life and lots of energy who really care that their guests have a good time.

We spent a week in the lower level and a week on the upper level of the villa, each had its charms, with views being more spectacular from the upper level, though the lower level was probably more practically laid out for a family. Loved the fact that beach towels were provided and we didn't need adapters for our electrical stuff. Lovely crisp white sheets on the beds. The sun beds by the pool were delightful, with shade if required. The kitchens were well equipped though eating in was more of a challenge than we're used to since no shops near by and we found the prices quite steep compared with the UK. It's an island, everything needs to be imported so be prepared. Carlos made an amazing BBQ for us one night with marinated chicken, christophenes and green banana salad, delicious.

Exploring the island was great fun, we hired a jeep to travel to the north and had lunch at Spinnakers at Rodney Bay, fabulous place right on the beach with a waiter who looked like Morgan Freeman. Doolittles in Marigot Bay is a restaurant we would not recommend (see my review on Trip Advisor). You can swim in the sea right outside though and the kids loved swinging on a rope around a palm tree on the beach nearby and leaping off into the water in the dark! Visiting the volcanic mud baths, thermal springs and exploring the rain forest with Pascale and co was magnificent, stopping to see the snake man and take photos of the Pietons en route. Carlos knows everyone and as we'd drive along through the little villages, his friends would leap into the back of the pick up truck from time to time, cadging a lift, magic. There are various beautiful beaches to drive to all around St Lucia.

The downside: we went in mid July which is the rainy season so lots of mosquitos and towards the end of our holiday three days of torrential rain. Be prepared and bring strong repellents, they somehow manage to get under the mosquito nets. We had a box set of 24, the thriller with Keiffer Sutherland with us, a good move for when it rained. There is a DVD player at the villa. The villa is quite isolated so you need to hire a jeep if you want to explore the island; we did this for a few days, choosing to chill by the pool for some of the time. Carlos was very helpful running us down to a restaurant in the evening in his truck or to the shops when we didn't have a car.

All in all, an amazing trip and thank you very much to Pascale, Carlos and Franz. Extra thank you to Franz for that wonderful cocktail you mixed, served with panache in a pineapple on the last night of our holiday and to Pascale for retuning my red bikini top. Sorry it's taken a while to write this review!

“Wow, what a treat!”

Wow, what a treat! Upon arrival at the oasis like setting of Villa Makambu, the holiday continued to exceed all of our expectations. Pascale and the staff of Carlos and Miranda did nothing but make our stay one that will be firmly entrenched in the memory banks of all of our group. We were a group of 12 and rented the entire property for a two week stay. The property had all of the amenities any group would enjoy, including the best pool I have ever swam in! The luscious garden setting just minutes above Marigot Bay provided awe inspiring vistas and a short walk to the town by the bay. The house had all of the requirements to provide everyone what they needed, from the plush pool towels to a kitchen with almost everything you need to the open veranda with the most comfortable rattan furniture. Carlos, the caretaker/concierge (don't tell him that, he is only doing his job...sure) has all of the answers to the questions you may have, Miranda, the housekeeper has a smile a mile wide and an attitude to match. They are the true beauty of the island, the local people! We were treated wonderfully, enjoyed the company of Pascal around the pool for the numerous happy hours. I would recommend this property to any of you that have the willingness to get out there and explore the island, immerse yourself in the culture and just want to feel the great vibe this place has to deliver. Immeasurable thanks to all involved with our trip in a lifetime. We will be back Pascal, and that is a promise.

“Best Vacation Ever!!”

There are several rentals in St. Lucia, but I am so glad that I chose to stay at Villa Makambu to celebrate my 28th birthday! Although we were there for a short period of time, Pascale, Carlos, Josee, and Smally made our vacation to St. Lucia a memorable one. We did not have the pleasure of meeting Pascale, but communicating with her to secure the reservation was simple. She was also very responsive to any inquiries we had about the island and activities. Smally made us feel at home. He met us at the airport and was more than happy to take us to Super J (the supermarket) and other sites prior to dropping us off at the villa. We were greeted by Josee and Carlos. We truly felt right at home. We will miss Carlos, Bounty (Carlos' dog) and Clemons (the cat) the most. One day, Carlos took us out on his boat for 6 hours! We visited Anse Mamin, Anse Cochon, Anse Chastanet, and stopped by Sourfiere to see the Pitons! What an awesome day! Carlos is the sweetest and funniest person that I met in St. Lucia.

I highly recommend staying at Villa Makambu!! This was by far the best vacation I've taken in a very long time. We owe it all to Pascale, Carlos, Smally, and Josee :)
