My husband and I booked a stay here this week to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We looked on the website and found a special deal for a “luxury break” for £200, which included a gorgeous room, afternoon tea, 4 course meal and full breakfast. £200 is a lot of money for us to spend on one night as we have a young family, but decided it would be worth it - and it definitely was.

We arrived at 4.30pm and was greeted at the reception desk by a very pleasant and polite woman. She booked us in and offered us our afternoon tea straight away. We took our bags to our room which was immaculate, then headed back down.

We had a sitting room to ourselves and our afternoon tea was brought in for us by a very polite waiter, the food was amazing. There was so much of it! Sandwiches, wraps, cakes, scones, champagne, tea and coffee! We couldn’t finish it all so the staff offered to box it up for us for later or to take home.

We then went up to our room t get ready for the evening. The bathroom was lovely, however the ONLY issue I had the entire time was the shower pressure. It was quite poor so took a little while to wash my hair. But I just put it down to it being an old building.

The evening meal was served in the restaurant, we sat in the bar first and had a drink while the waiter took our order and once it was ready we were taken through to the restaurant. The food was all freshly cooked, and delicious. It was brought out in a timely manner and had no complaints at all.

Our room was pitch black at night, very quiet and lovely and warm. The bed was clean and crisp - so comfortable and huge!

The morning breakfast we could choose whatever we wanted from the menu. I had a full breakfast and it was lovely. It wasn’t greasy or too much, it was fresh and hot.

Overall we had a brilliant time. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, always happy to help whatever you asked.

We will definitely be staying again

We stayed here for one night after a rugby match in Cardiff. There was no problem in being late arrivals and we still received a professional and warm welcome at Reception. Our room was huge, spotlessly clean and the shower was so clean i was tempted to ask what they use to clean it- it was gleaming!

We were a bit concerned as there was a wedding and our room was above the loud disco but we needn't have worried as it quietened down and the guests were also quiet going to their rooms.

Breakfast... was amazing! Everything was served at your table which made a lovely change from a buffet. The fruit salad was fresh, varied and delicious, the full English even included fried bread - a real treat. The service was well organised, friendly and efficient despite it being very busy for the team. The coffee was the best we have had in a hotel and it was a very pleasant experience.

Well done and thank you to all!

Checking in was quick and efficient . Staff welcoming and friendly.
We had the luxury of enjoying the champagne afternoon tea. Waw. We were waited upon by Sulthan, who was attentive to the finest of detail. The food was well presented varied and plentiful . Delicious. The best afternoon tea we have had anywhere . Would be very difficult to improve on . The room was airy and comfortable.
The supper menu was extensive with plenty of choices. My husband and I were both delighted with our choices. Again we could find no fault with the food. Compliments to the chef! The steak and venison were cooked to perfection. We were again waited upon by Sulthan, who was unobtrusive and very attentive to our needs. Thank you very much Sulthan!
Breakfast was made to order, fresh and delicious . Again, we were fortunate to have Sulthan, waiting on us .
We stayed at the cottage which was warm and comfortable, perfect for our night away!
We would highly recommend staying here or dining here.

We attended our son’s wedding at the Glen-yr-Afon on 24th February 2018 and had a wonderful day. The staff are highly professional and efficient with a friendly manner.

We must mention Carol, the wedding co-ordinator, who did a great job; her attention to detail is second to none. Sulthan was super-efficient and having worked very hard on Saturday, was back to serve breakfast on Sunday morning!

The room was laid out beautifully for both the service and the wedding breakfast. The food was excellent and the service was seamless.

Quite a few family members and friends stayed the night and met for breakfast on Sunday. Again, the food and service were excellent.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was a very happy day for all of us and we had the bonus of very sunny (but cold) weather which made for great photos outside.

The Glen-yr-Afon is highly recommended for weddings, overnight stays and dining.

I have stayed at the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel 3 times now and am basically running out of superlatives to describe this gem in rural Wales. Two 60th birthdays and one New Year have been celebrated in this excellent hotel. Staff - amazing, accommodation - excellent, food - delicious, setting - idyllic. If you have plans for a special celebration and you can get everyone to Usk, you will not be disappointed by the Glen-Yr-Afon. We will be going back again and again!

Room Tip: If you have a special request, ask the staff
