Bit disappointed about the Canyon! Because everything is in such large scale in Namibia I was expecting something like the Grand Canyon!!! Well not really!
To be fair was on the way to other magnificent attractions so didn’t really mind it in the end but…

Whilst staying at the nearby Dead Valley Lodge, just inside the park gate at Sesriem, we visited the Sesriem canyon just before sunset. The scale of the canyon and the history of its creation are incredible - how the Tsauchab River carved a narrow 100 foot deep gorge out of the rock dating back 2,000,000 years. With our guide, we climbed down into the canyon and walked as far as it was possible before encountering fallen rocks, blocking the path inland. It was also interesting to learn about the last time the canyon flooded (2021 from memory) and trying to visualise the volume of water that must have forced its way through the canyon at the time, heading for Sossusvlei and the sea. Just incredible.

It was a bit of a hike going down into the canyon but if you are able bodied it shouldn't be a problem. It was shady at the bottom. We were told that this is one of the few places that holds water all year round. It was created by the Tsauchab river over millions of years. Our guide offered to take us for a walk down into the canyon which most did. Our guide found a Adwof pick snake, bitter bush (used as a flu remedy) link ringwood tree and lots of fantastic beetles running around. There was also a barn owl high up at the end of the canyon looking down at the tourists. One of the pools of water had a massive diving beetle which refused to come up for long enough to be photographed but was the size of small chicken egg. We made our way back up through the canyon and onto our wagon and in five minutes we were back at the Sossusvlei lodge.

A great walk through the canyon. While this is not the biggest canyon, it is well worth a visit. The rock formations as well as the creatures living in the canyon make for a good experience.
