As a group of 6 we had a nice stay at this resort. We were met by Hadi at the port which was great. We were a little shocked to find that the pool was green when we arrived but they assured us they had simply had too much rain of late. Anyway the pool did clear up but never looked totally inviting. The rooms were comfortable, the air con was good downstairs but the main bedroom upstairs was a little noisy. Just be prepared that you can’t put your toilet paper directly into the toilet but into a bin beside it - you get used to it but I have to say I didn’t like it. Obviously the sewer is not connected. Breakfast is a simple affair, nicely cooked by the lovely ladies. One thing I was not impressed with was the bath towel situation. We placed our towels on the floor in order to get fresh ones but found that the dirty ones were placed back on the rail for another use! We had to request to have fresh ones. The same goes for the beach towels, if you don’t ask you don’t get. While they provide bikes for your use, some do not have brakes so be careful, they are not looked after and just left in the rain to get rusty. I have to say that the staff were really nice and did everything in their power to keep us happy but perhaps management needs to do a stocktake of the property. It is a relaxing place ro stay, away from the hustle and bustle, which was important to our group.
We stayed for two nights travelling in a group of 6 (3 couples). The villa itself is cosy and comfortable and very clean - the beds were very comfortable. The staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. As we stayed over valentines day - our husbands arranged for the staff to get us flowers and a beautiful bbq dinner on the beach which was fantastic... The food was delicious (the curry was the best curry I had in Indonesia) and they also had a bonfire for us to enjoy after dinner. The highlight of our trip was snorkelling with the turtles which is directly out the front of the villa - the villa also has reef shoes and snorkels for your use. It was amazing and the water was crystal clear. can't wait to go back again.
Pros: Fully equipped with everything, helpful and discrete staff, well maintained amenities
Cons: Limited food choices nearby although staff will help you buy whatever you want
Who: 8 pax – 20s to 30s.
The Gili Beach Resort (GBR) met us at Seminyak, Bali, and brought us to Padang Bai where Mr Komang stuck to us from the ticket collection until we were front row for the ferry. This was bada## since there were a hundred other people trying to get on said boat.
Upon reaching Gili Trawangan, Pak Hadi, our main Gili man, took over. He loaded us (politely) onto 4 horse carts, and we were off bouncing to our own private retreat. We only needed to tell them our location in Bali and schedule and they will arrange everything else. Holidays couldn’t be simpler.
Before this becomes a novel, let me try to keep everything short:
ACTIVITIES: Do you want to snorkel/dive? They can arrange a private boat/company for you that can either pick you up at your beach (depending on the tide) or make a short 15min walk to the boat. The beachfront also has a good range of marine life. We saw squids and eels amongst the hundreds of fishes. Ask them for coral boots to protect your delicate feet. And don’t forget to bring bread for the fishes! The fishes expect you to feed them, trust me.
FOOD: Where’s the nearest food place? It’s a few mins walk or someone can send it to you. Alternatively, you can ask for some local dishes (the food that locals actually eat) and they can either bring you on a 20min walk to this small hut in the middle of nowhere or pack your lunch back. They say it’s the best food in Gili and I have to agree with them. Breakfast is a simple affair and it can be tweaked to suit your taste (spicy, non-spicy).
DRINK: Want beer? It’s in the fridge (chargeable at below market rates). Not enough? Let them know and they will stock up. Need chasers? Someone can shop for you. Since most items are imported it may be wise to bring your own.
MASSAGE? Again, walk a few mins round the corner or they can send someone over.
WIFI: Good enough to stream Spotify unless everyone’s updating their Instagrams at the same time.
DIRECTIONS: You can try passing through the centre of the island or just turn right once you exit the villa. You will come across a dodgy narrow ledge by the sea (which takes great balancing powers especially with a bicycle) but it’s the fastest route.
BONFIRE: A highlight of our stay cos it makes dinner at the beach that extra special. You can arrange the time for this dinner at your convenience but do note that payment for this is separate as well. Ask the manager for specific details on the cost. Is it value for money? We had to ask the cook (happened to be Pak Hadi himself!) to stop as we could not finish. There was too much seafood! Everything was delicious too!
CYCLING: They have good condition bicycles for guests to use. Ride around the island but be careful when coming back at night cos u need lights if going via inland. And take note to walk carefully when going along the beach.
HELP: If all else fails and you need local assistance, just walk behind the house. Someone will be around to assist.
In summary, we stayed about 4 days here. Too short but my first trip to Gili was amazing thanks to the team from this resort. I hope to return to their smiles soon.
- State your expectations clearly (especially when you engage with external agents) so that they know what you want. Eg: if you want a chatty English-speaking guide for snorkeling, ask for one. Mine could not but we understood Indonesian so everything worked out.
- Costs are transparent so you may settle them daily or do it at the end of the stay. Ask for a daily summary so you can know how best to manage your budget.
- Leave a good tip for everyone, they really worked their best.
- Bring a torch! Nights can get quite dark there.
We have been on a 17 holiday traveling around and we were lucky enough to spend 3 of the nights at The Gili Beach Resort. The only bad point was that we didn't spend longer here.
Hadi and the team were amazing. We walked off the boat and Hadi was there to greet us and help us get the horse and carts to get us to the villa. The staff cannot do enough for you and nothing is too much trouble. We couldn't believe how many people were there to look after us.
The views and the snorkelling right on your doorstep are the best on the island. Boats travel to this spot to see the thousands of fish in the coral. You literally walk out of your door and into the warmest water and there are fish round your ankles. The boys went off and saw turtles while the girls had some sunbathing time.
The team organised a bbq on the beach and built us a fire. Hadi also organised a birthday cake for our friends 50th and the staff all came out singing.
The breakfast was lovely and ready when we wanted it with a great choice each day. They kept our fridge stocked with beers and tonic and Herman ran out to.pick up supplies from the store and even went to town to get our money changed.
We went round the island on the bikes which was good fun. We even created a DIY wedding vow renewal while we were here.
Hadi organised our departure boat and was there to make sure our luggage was loaded and to wave us off. This also included the bus to our next hotel. He thinks of every little thing to make your stay perfect.
We would love to come back here and can't recommend it enough.
Thanks for everything.

We can't rave enough about our stay at the Gili Beach Resort. The Villa is just stunning.....if you are up early as we were with young kids, the view to the beach at sunrise and full tide is a sight to behold. The staff at the Villa were AMAZING. Azzie, Made, Aysha were just lovely and cooked beautiful breakfasts for us. Also Tony the security guard....a lovely man! I can't speak highly enough of Hadi the manager.....he was so helpful and accommodating and just a great person! We loved chatting to him and learning more about Lombok and his life and family. We arrived in the last few days of Ramadan (the Muslim fasting) and learnt all about this too. Hadi was very helpful organising tours and our boat when we had to leave. And even beyond that he helped recover a lost bag that we failed to pick up when we arrived at Padang Bai and got it delivered to our villa in Ubud. He is worth his weight in gold!! Thank you Hadi!
The location of the Villa is on the north coast and away from the busyness....but still close to some great restaurants (Wilson's and Karma Kayak and just next door is Made's Warung). They organised bikes for us and we circled the island many times! High tide is in the morning so if you want to swim in the ocean it has to be done then...or it's easier anyway!
I too was a little shocked at the state of some of the horses/ponies on the island....foaming at the mouth etc and of course the poverty of some of the locals inland. With the horses we decided once we were there that we wouldn't use them for transport and only walked and used our bikes. When we left we put our luggage on a horse and cart but we walked to the harbour. I saw way too many overloaded carts :-( I would love to think that the tourist dollar helps the island in a real way and was very happy to learn about the Gili Eco Trust who do great work for the environment and animals on Gili T. I would love to see this Trust more widely promoted on the island and by the Villas because I feel many tourists staying would happily donate to their work. Perhaps the Villas could donate a small percentage of their accommodation fees to organisations such as the Gili Eco Trust.
We fell in love with Gili T and with the Gili Beach Resort! And we can't wait to go back.
It could be a good idea for them to have a big day bed in the master bedroom which could double as a bed for an older child? They also have 2 rollaway beds for children up to the age of 8-10.
