Owner description: Soaring over 2300 meters above sea level, Mount Bromo is the only active volcano inside Java's spectacular Tengger Caldera national park.
Reviewed 19 March 2014

Bromo is one of the three volcanoes to have emerged from a vast crater, stretching 10 km across. Flanked by the peaks of Kursi and Batok, the steaming cone of Bromo stands in a sea of ashen, volcanic sand, surrounded by the towering cliffs of the crater's edge. Gunung Bromo is at its ethereal best at sunrise. Bromo can be approached from a number of routes, including Wonokitri from the northwest, Nagadas from the southwest and Probolinggo.
We followed the Wonokitri approach from Pasuruan. Then we took 4WD all the way to the base of Bromo and rode a pony across the sand to the base. We climbed the stone staircase to the edge of the crater to watch the steaming cone.

Beauitful and unique experience. Didn't go with a tour because we wanted flexibility and didn't want to be ripped off, it was a good choice. We stayed in the economy room at Lava Cafe, was very nice for only 150 000 rupees.

The only bad thing was almost being conned and ripped off, and the horses used to carry people up mt bromo. It was heartbreaking to be so close to animal cruelty and it made me cry twice.

My boyfriend and I decided to visit Mount Bromo on a whim and so didn't have much time to plan before. There are a few things I would like to have known before:
1. When going to propollingo on the bus DO NOT get out before you are at the bus terminal. They will tell you that you have arrived but they are in fact dropping you off at a tour agency. This happened to us so we starting walking the 1km to the terminal and got picked up by a little bus taxi who charged us 3000 rupees each to take us to the terminal.
2. The mini bus taxis cost 30000 to cemero lawang. They are unlikely to fill up after 5PM if you are not in high season and you will be forced to pay more or go with a tour.
3. Dont do the jeep tours to see the sunrise, rather rent a guide and a motorbike. We both went of the back of a mans motorbike, and he took us everywhere so quickly, and we watched the sunrise with no crowds - we were the only people.
4. If you decide to hike - take a BRIGHT torch. We first tried this but it was too dark and dangerous to hike alone with such bad light. so we went back a hired the motorbike.

5. DO NOT RIDE A HORSE!!!! the horses are so mistreated - they are too small to carry people, especially up steep hills. they aren't given water. I saw a horses back legs almost playing under the weight of a man riding him up mt bromo and it bought me to tears. I can't believe there are still people in this day and age who can so blatantly support animal cruelty. The horse owners hurt them and i often saw horses resisting due to exhaustion and bucking when the owner hit them. BROKE MY HEART. ITs such a short hike don't be lazy.

As we've read a few times, in te bus from Surabaya to Brobolingo, a guy tried to make us go out of the bus before the terminal to bring us to a travel agency. Just insist that you want to go to the terminal and he'll leave you alone. From the bus terminal, in order to find the public minibuses (green), go out of the train station from the main entrance until you reach the road and go left for about 200 meters. The drivers are waiting there. You might pay Rp30.000 if the bus is full - what you don't especially want for the next 2 hours or, you can share the ride with some other people and pay Rp450.000 for the whole bus. The drive up to Cemara Lawang is magnificent! Amazing steep fields on the mountain sides. We stayed atthe lava cafe hosel which was totally ok for the price, except that the nights were quite humid and fresh in the room. We paid 350.000 for the night in a double room with private bathroom (rudimentary but totally fine if you're not a cleanliness freak). The owner of the place will offer you to go on a sunrise tour with a jeep. DO not hesitate to walk in town before accepting his proposal and gather offers. Sunrise is great but...try to leave earlier as other jeeps as the good spots rare and you might have 100s of people standing in front of you. Amazing landscape!
BE CAREFUL IN BROBOLINGO: on our way back from Brobolingo to Surabaya, we wanted to find a public bus we had on the way from surabaya to Brobolingo (Rp27.000 for 2 hours). As always people try to bring you in one bus or the other and an especially agressive one asked us to pay Rp50.000 each before putting our bags in the trunk. We gave him the money. But we've been told after we should ALWAYS BUY THE BUS TICKETS INSIDE THE BUS. In the end we didn't have to pay twice but...we paid twice the price. Apparently, it's kind of a mafia there. So...just pretend you don't speak english, get in the bus which are in the Surabaya line and...everything will be just fine!
IF YOU HAVE A KITAS or INDONESIAN STUDENT CARD, you will pay Rp.10.000 instead of Rp.75.000 for the National Park entrance.

If you were on the tight budget but want to see magnificent view of sunrise, go to Bromo. Relatively cheaper than anywhere else in Indonesia, this trip quite worth the money. The only thing is that you have to wake up very early to catch it on the mountain top. If you were a bit out of shape, you can rent a horse for riding. A must try.
