Driving up the hairpin road leads to this incredible condo. The views must be among the best on Lake Como. (After you drive the road the first or second time it becomes a piece of cake.) Large spacious unit with two bedrooms on opposite sides of the apartment give personal privacy for each room and bathroom. Kitchen is adequately equipped with microwave and dishwasher. Washing machine...good. No clothes dryer but they do provide a clothes drying rack. If you direct the two portable room fans toward the clothes on the drying rack they will dry quickly.
Varenna is a very quiet village. No high end shopping. No hordes of tourists. Pretty much no shopping at all except for a small grocery, pharmacy, and excellent art gallery. Excellent restaurants are available.
Despite the instructions they send you when you confirm, the unit does have wifi. You do not need to rent a USB stick. The password they gave us was incorrect. When we added "hhh" to the beginning of the password, it worked. You need 8 characters for the password.
We were there in early October. No screens on the windows or patio doors meant a couple of mosquitos inside the unit. I realize that electricity is a luxury in Europe but lightbulbs with more wattage would be nice. Is there a way to get some English language TV news stations?
Summer might be brutal. The unit faces west, and the afternoon sun pours into the unit and reflects off the white walls. Very bright on a sunny late afternoon. Bring sunglasses.
There appear to be many unsold units in this complex. This is good for you because it is very quiet and un-crowded.
We highly recommend the excursion to St. Moritz. Sounds touristy, but... WOW... the scenery, Switzerland, the glaciers. Take a picnic lunch. Eating in St. Moritz might break the bank. St. Moritz is a big disappointment. Very expensive and no charm whatsoever. Take this excursion for the train ride through incredible valleys, mountains, high alpine scenery, and small towns.
If you appreciate fine and unusual pottery, take the drive up toward the "castle" in Vezio and follow the signs to the small pottery (ceramiche) shop.
Park in the free spaces before the walk to the castle. Follow the signs to the shop.
I highly recommend this rental unit. The rental company staff in Menaggio are very helpful (Happy Holiday Homes). Danilo promptly responded to my phone calls and was concerned about our comfort.
