I booked the Mehdia surf camp after asking the Lonely Planet forum for advice on where to go for beginner's surfing north of Casablanca. This place is a gem on the Atlantic. We are total beginners and we were given fantastic equipment, a gorgeous room/house/hut to ourselves (there were two extra single beds in there but the place wasn't too busy so we were just the two of us, quite romantic it turns out - see pic) on suite bathroom with warm shower, soaps, towels... Great value for money. Email Boumediene Omari (info@mehdiasurf.com) for a specific quote if you're not staying the standard 7 days as quoted on the website. We only wanted three nights but with meals and transfers included. Call Boum from Kenitra train station on arrival and he'll come fetch you from the beach. Food is healthy, slimming and delicious (fresh fish, strawberries, fresh orange juice, tagines...) A whole tuna fish was delivered from a fisherman on one day (far more exciting than an Ocado delivery). French/Arabic and some English is spoken. Surfing lessons happen on a quiet part of the long beach, great for beginners, false beginners and improvers. You can do surfing morning and afternoon (both or just one if you're feeling woosy or your muscles hurt from the previous day as mine did- particularly arms and upper abs). There isn't much faffing on theory, you get taught the basics and then Boum corrects your mistakes. Free wifi in the main area, lots of guests tapping away on laptops in the evening. Beware the local seaside town is VERY quiet and a bit run down so don't come here if you're hoping for boozy clubbing! The beach has some glass on it but it isn't sharp and local kids run around on the sand no problem. A great escape for urbanites, bring a book for the evenings. Very friendly staff, we loved chatting to them. We didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back.

Mehdia surf camp haa become our every weekend surf escape, only 30 min driving from rabat. The place has 2 twin wood cottages and a seperated studio. Each cottage has 2 rooms a private bathroom and a cosy living room where you can watch dvds and relax in a great athmosphere mixing balinese and moroccan decorations. They all are open on a magic garden full of flowers, plants and trees (if you look close you may find some papayas ;)). Food is surfed on long wooden tables near the open-kitchen or at the bar. Is it important to mention that the food is the best you can have let alone for its value : fresh fish from the nearby port cooked by Mrs Mira, perfection !
For those who are into surfing (well like me), mehdia has some of the best wave conditions all year around -even in summer months where everything is flat-.
I can only encourage you to have some aftersession fresh drinks with the owner : boumediane a hell of a guy, the experience wont be the same without him and his delightful wife ! Give it a try we may meet there :)
