Best experiences and memories

We stayed at Shakama Valley Lodge for my 40th girl's weekend away celebration from 9 Sept to 11 Sept 2016. The lodge is beautiful, tranquil and has amazing mountain views. We were the only guests and we were given the freedom to play our own music. The staff was absolutely outstanding, they thoroughly spoiled us, and appeared completely seamless in their service. The recommended Chef's ( Abel Ndlovu) cooking was absolutely outstanding, and above all did it with a really lovely personal touch. In a nutshell we had an EPIC memorable weekend which is what we needed to celebrate my 40th Birthday. Thank you Sean Weber and the Team.

We stayed at Shakama on our annual girl's weekend away this past weekend. The lodge is beautiful, tranquil and has amazballs mountain views. We stayed at the Mountain Lodge and were the only guests there which we thoroughly enjoyed. We were given the freedom to play our own music and design our own meals by the chef and the staff were sooo friendly and helpful. In a nutshell we had a blast and which was exactly what we needed to get away from the JHB non-stop high pace. The only let downs which really weren’t that serious was that their DSTV was faulty on such a big sporting weekend (Tennis, Grand Prix and Nedbank Final) and the looong gravel road we had to travel on to get there. PS we loved the free WIFI! lol

Room tip: Take a 4X4 and bring everything you need as the shops are far BUT Shaun was such a good host he got us supplies when he drove into town.

In Feb 2013 I booked two guests into Shakama for the long weekend in August after seeing the property and discussing a lovely romantic package with the then lodge management couple. The 50% deposit was paid in February. When I came to pay the remaining 50% two weeks before, the manager informed me that the lodge was closed to small bookings and the guests would not be able to go there. This was the most shocking news as we had not been informed and they had our deposit for 6 months. We then had to find alternate accommodation for my guests on a similar itinerary which was extremely difficult as everything was full being a long weekend, resulting in my me loosing money as I had to pay in, to get them into the only remaining lodge in the area which was much more expensive AND loosing face with the clients as suddenly their planned holiday was in a shambles. This predicament did not seem to bother Shakama. The deposit was refunded a week later after numerous desperate daily phone calls so that I could use that to pay the new lodge I had sourced. I still await the letter from management about this terrible situation we found ourselves in so that we can send to the clients.

I expected a luxury experience, which was probably the wrong thing to do, but based on the price (R2000 / pppn) that seemed reasonable. The lodge is very quaint and nice and the dinner was above average. But the lodge as a whole is nothing more than 3.5 stars and service was, on the weekend I was there, non-committal. (It was possibly because I arrived very late on a Friday night and the manager wanted to be in bed by 21:00.) Breakfast was positively disappointing, using only the cheapest products (canned juice etc) and the staff needs to learn how to make coffee. I would not go again unless it is half the price.

Between the property, the accommodations, and the staff, our stay was amazing. The property is beautiful in itself. The nature of the property, with its vast hills, provides for scenic views from virtually everywhere on the lodge. The cuisine is equally amazing; 4 course meals from a fully equipped kitchen with the chef explaining the menu prior to every dinner. The rooms were beautifully laid out, with tremendous views of the unique African landscapes of Bela-Bela. The staff was the icing on the cake; more than helpful in every aspect in-house and on game drives. Would love to go again!

We spent a lovely relaxing weekend at this lodge, the suites were lovely, comfortable chairs to sit in, king size bed with lovely linen and the whole suite spotless. A lovely private balcony with compfrtable chairs and table to sit and look over the valley. The lodge is small which gives a special ambiance. The staff were all very friendly and no matter what was requested it arrived. The chef Lindiwe was a treasure and her food was excellent. Lots of comfy sofas and books available to sit and relax as well as nice outdoor areas. There is a spa, tv room if you want to watch - no tv's in the rooms. They do game drives early morning and evening sundowner drives which are pleasant - it is not a "big Five" resort which is nice to be able to walk around the reserve.
Highly recommend this lodge for a special weekend away. So many other extras like coffee/tea fruit all available on the bar. Nice selection of wines, a bit different from the usual. This is one of the best lodges I have visited and will definately love to go back . The one downside is the last 15Klms of untarred road into the resort, but we drove slowly in a normal car and it was worth the drive in.

Room tip: The lodge has 2 suites in the lodge and the rest are chalets/cottages all excellent with nice views. Only downfall is the last 15Klms of untarred road but worth the drive in
