I've come to this hotel because of its proximity to Munich -- you get here easily by train --, the good reviews on tripadvisor, and a fantastic previous experience in another Romantik hotel in Italy. The expectations with the Hotel Der Alpenhof have been disappointed. The good things about the hotel are: it is clean, the location is nice, the surroundings are beautiful, and the interior of the building is decorated as a typical Bavarian house. For all the rest, we have bees quite disappointed by the way the overall structure was run. Worst of all, the restaurant. Very bad experience for dinner mainly because of the service (I wrote a detailed separate review for the Seeberg restaurant) -- my advice is to go and eat somewhere near but not in the in-house restaurant. We had high expectations for breakfast, but the actual experience is not what you would expect from a 4-star hotel that advertises breakfast as one of its highlights. Breakfast is self-service, which is of course fine if food is available all the time. Instead, you typically have to wait for the food to be available -- everything from the plates runs out instantly and the service is very slow. On top of that, coffee is served from jars on the table. Croissants look like supermarket-style, defrosted with microwave owen. The bread is not always fresh. There is a bar in the hotel, nominally open from 8:30pm. In three days, we only saw once a barman available. One morning there was no hot water in the shower in the room. Another day (mid July, outside temperature 25+) the heating system in our bathroom was on. We also tried to use the swimming pool but the temperature of the water was very cold. I have to praise very much one of the concierges -- typically working in the afternoon -- for doing all the jobs you would not expect from a concierge: spilling beer for us because no one was working at the bar, cleaning the outside tables for letting us sit there, taking care of the heater and so on. He was simply exceptional, but from a 4-star (Romantik) hotel you should expect much, much more. It looks like an understaffed place, where things are organized somewhat superficially. Highly disappointing for a 4-star hotel
