My husband and I recently spent a week at the Rest. We wanted something besides an all inclusive, near the ocean but yet out in the country side. The Rest was perfect for us. Margi was so helpful, picking me up from Luperon and giving me a tour of the town. Even helped me find the best grocery store.
The Rest itself is very charming and clean with a beautiful private patio that overlooks the countryside. The beach is about a 20 minute walk and quite lovely. You can get into town easily by calling a motoconcho, but if you want to go on day trips, Margi will help you find a driver. We loved Santiago and Nino our drivers who were very reasonable. It seemed like everyone we connected with was intent on us enjoying our visit. There are many interesting adventurous day trips, if you want to leave the quiet little casa. And Margi was very available to help with the planning. We went to Punta Rusio and Sosua, since my husband was interested in diving, and 27 Falls, which was a tiny bit too challenging, but beautiful.
We will definitely be going back to the Rest. What a treat!
We had turned our backs to luxury hotels and all inclusives some time ago. We are fairly well traveled throughout the D.R. and were looking for a semi-remote location not too far from a major airport and would hopefully harbor the potential for adventure. Bingo !! Luperon !!
We found "The Rest" on Tripadvisor and were impressed. It is the upper level of a two-apartment (guest house), stand alone unit about fifty feet from the main house. Everything is built into a hillside and offers a panoramic view from Luperon Bay (teaming with sailboats from all over the Caribbean), overseeing the village of Luperon to the hills that protect the area from storms and hurricanes.
We got in touch with Margie the owner, who was a dear. She answers her email promptly and concisely responds to every inquiry and concern you put to her. We decided to book the larger apartment "The Rest" and hoped for the best. Margie explained that she would not be there for our visit but was leaving the place under the management of some good friends.
We arrived just after nightfall and even with good directions ended up paying a local motoconcha to lead us to our destination. Upon our arrival it was love at first sight. This apartment is more like a little private house. The interior is a open and very trendy "loft" design. The sleeping area is four steps up. It overlooks and is separated from the kitchen/sitting area by a very low E wall. You enter the structure at the corner, which is wrapped by approx. fifteen feet of sliding glass doors. The outdoor covered patio offers one of the most peaceful and varied views one could ask for. THIS PLACE IS HEAVENLY. There are large flowering plants all over the grounds, often creating tall privacy walls. Someone put a lot of time and creative effort into this little Eden.
The privacy afforded to us was incredible. Most of the time we felt as though we were alone on the entire property until we had a question or a need, in which case help was always available at the end of the short walk to the main house. Margie's friend Mary and her son Mathew were the hosts with the most. The small but fun wading pool behind the main house was at our disposal 24/7 and our hosts were happy to provide lighting or lack thereof depending on our mood and desire.
We never felt any need to lock the doors, even when going out for the day.
We went horseback riding along the waterfront and then took to the hill country where we spotted several eagle sized hawks soaring about. While in the hills it was fun to run into Hernan Vargas, a big time Dominican singing star who was there shooting photos and videos in the wild. Turned out that Luperon is his hometown. My wife Mia was thrilled to have her picture taken with him.
We spent many hours in the town, doing business and getting acquainted with the locals who are very hospitable, friendly and honest. We went to several beaches, one of which was deserted.
Our best days were those that we spent entirely at "The Rest" without venturing out. There is no TV here. It would be an intrusion. This place was built for rest and romance. A glass of wine, soft music, fresh local produce and fruit make a week pass as if it were a day.
We can't say enough good things about this place and the people running it. We're going back just as soon as we can. I hope it's not booked due to our glowing review ha-ha.
Thank you Margie, Mary and Mathew for one of our best times ever. Bob and Mia
P.S. Bear in mind that this is a little outlying town in the Dominican Republic. It's not Punta Cana or Santo Domingo
