“Appalling attitude from owner”

Elferhuette Wanderzentrum

We decided to break our walk here for some refreshments. We were a party of four, however only three of us were thirsty. We ordered drinks and sat down for a quarter of an hour to drink our coffees etc and then before departing, two of us needed to use the toilets. They were told that the cost to use the toilets was 50 Cents and that the person who didn't order a drink was not allowed to use the toilets! As I was the only German speaker in the party, I went to check that their understanding had been correct as I was pretty incredulous that this could be the case. The owner then launched into a tirade of vitriol, across the restaurant, about people daring to enter his restaurant without ordering. I pointed out that she was part of a party who was indeed ordering refreshments from him but this did not stop his ranting. Let me be clear that she was sitting at a four seater table in a party of four in a restaurant that was nearly empty (unsurprising!). Quite what impact he thought this would have on his turnover is a complete mystery to me. Shouting at customers however does have a very significant impact on his turnover. I can't tell you what the food was like as we obviously did not return for lunch. Given the owners attitude to customers, I think I can guess. I sincerely hope for everyone sake the owner finds something he enjoys and is suited to but hospitality is sadly not it. Life is too short to be doing something you clearly hate doing.

Hanging on a small ledge the Elferhütte is a ok place for a simlpe lunch or a cup of coffee. You just want to load up on carbs so don't be looking for the fancy stuff. Strait forward and no thrills. Fantasitc view overlooking Meiders and Fulpmes. Recommended as a ok place to take a break and relax.

Me and my husband travel to the Austrian Alps every year and could not believe there was a charge for use of the toilets. Never before have we been charged to use toilets at mountain huts, especially when we were buying food and drinks. 1€ is far too much anyway! And a turnstile in place !
We decided to move on to the next hut, where there was not a charge for the toilet facilities. We will not be recommending this place to anyone in the future.

We have travelled quite a lot in Austria and have anjoyed many long walks, taking in their "mountain hut" system. But never; never have we been asked to pay for use of the toilet.

Unlike other "huts", when I asked for a soft drink, I was not asked whether I wanted small or large and automatically given large drinks. And at 4 euros each, they were about the same size as those costing 2.70 euros a further 2 hours walk away.

When we questioned the toilet charge and asked if it only applied to those who were not customers (not unreasonable), we were told the charge applied to all and the rationale was that "we are up a mountain". Well, this establishment is about a 30 min walk from the top of the cable car. If more remote huts can provide toilet facilities free of charge, I dont see why this one cannot.

In conclusion I would say that this is a total rip off and best avoided if you can manage it. If doing a longer walk, have a coffee at the restaurant at the top of the cable car and use their excellent facilities.

We went on a walk to the elferhutte on our first day here and had lunch there. We had 'tiroler Speckbrot' and also 'Kasebrod, and both were really good! Great for lovers of more traditional lunch dishes!
