“Stunning beach house in perfect location”
Reviewed 9 November 2014 for a stay in November 2014

We enjoyed our stay at Thambilli very much. The house and facilities and location are 5 star, but the service was only 3 star, hence the 4 star rating.

The pool, the view, the house where all stunning. The booking process with the owner was easy and straightforward and the owner was very lovely.

The only thing that let down our stay was unexperienced onsite staff. Given adequate training to upgrade the level of service, Thambilli house would offer a truly 5 star Sri Lankan experience.

“Very nice location at the most beautifull beach of Sri Lanka”

From an architectural point of view, absolutely a great house. The swimming pool is great. You have the feeling to swim in the ocean. There is staff available only if you need them. They prepared us every morning breakfast and we had one evening dinner. The house is located at only a few minutes from the village Unawatuna with a took took. The view you have from the terras is amazing. For all these reasons, we would really advice the house. It has place enough for 8 people, and 9 is possible (we were there with 2 families with 2 and 3 children).
There are also points to improve. It's a pity to have a kitchen without equipment (they say that they cook whatever you want but however ...) and unfortunately, the construction is not so perfect with as a consequence leaks when it rains a lot. It makes also that there is a lot of humidity in the house. The owner told us that they would do repairing in the coming months which is necessary. The staff we had was great. Two young guys that do the cleaning when you asked, and one woman that cooked, were really very friendly. We had our questions about the honesty of their manager (asking 1000 roepies for a van to Unawatuna centre was ridiculous as it was not bringing the 9the mattress in the beginning), but haven't seen him anymore after complaining about him to the owners. We really have had other managers of staff in Sri Lanka who understood that foreigners are not so stupid, and do deserve respect and not only there to spend money. But let's stay optimistic, he was young and can learn. So even without his apologizes, we will give him a next chance :-).
To conclude: nice house, but expensive and certainly not 100% perfect

“This is a fantastic place to rent”

I really recommend the thambilli beach house. It is great to families. We stayed 10 days and should have been there longer. We rented both the beach house and the cabana. We were 2 families on total 10 persons and it was space enough. I recommend the thambilli beach house if your only one family. Thats because the pool is there. The pool is great. The beach is also great, but there are some rocks there so be careful in the waves.
The service is fantastic. Good food and clean rooms. We ate a fantastic curry here....best I had in Sri Lanka.
Ranga fixes everything and we went to Yala national park. A pretty long journey but it was worth it.
We had a day at the safari beach. Ok traditional beach.
We visit the turtle farm, and the kids loved the evening when the helped the turtle babies in to the ocean.
The boys and the cook is very kind and helps with tuk tuk rides and shopping. I think it is really worth the money. Its a bit outside unawatuna, 3-4 min with a tuk tuk, but as a family we were happy about this.
Let Fiametta fix the transport to the beach house from the airport. We god a great big van with AC....good.
The kitchen is ok, but there is no reason to cook for yourself. The food that they made for you is very good. It were sometimes empty for glasses and knives but its just to ask for it so will they fix it.
So to Ranga, Charmichael, Deshan and the cook: thanks for a wonderful stay. We truly recommend this.

“Great location - all the amenities”

The good:
Great location - 10 min to Galle
Beautiful pool and house
Nice owner - easy to deal with
Private transport from Colombo in nice A/C van is available
Great cook - very good food
Property manager Ranga is really helpful
Tuk tuk is usually available which is nice - we paid 900 rupees for a round trip ride into town - maybe a bit high but worth it for the convenience.

The bad:
Not too much privacy: During the week we stayed there were too many people besides the house staff who hang out there - it felt like the house staff had their friends over to the property all the time
We had many electrical problems with the house during the week we stayed due to internal wiring issues

“Great House, Staff average”
Reviewed 28 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

I stayed at this house in early June for a period of 4 nights and there was 6 of us travelling.
It is a very well designed house, right on the sea and the swimming pool is right overlooking the ocean. Nice high ceilings in the house with the master bedroom having an outside bathroom.
The property has 2 villas on it which they rent out (we were the only group staying while we were there however, it could lose some of the charm of renting a private villa if the other villas was full though) and a seperate building for another kitchen and where the staff live.

It is a close walk to Unawatuna township. The sea outside the house is quite rocky, there is a small beach area but the sea comes right up so can't really sunbath on the beach but you can by the poolside which looks over the sea, and the beach area was covered with rubbish.
The time of the year we went the sea was quite rough but there were fisherman snorkelling and diving for crustaceans right outside. So you could swim there if you wanted, at the time of year we went even in Unawatuna itself it was very rough and we didn't spend much time in the sea there either, spending a lot of time in the pool instead.
The food cooked by the staff were very delicious when it arrived. Very tasty. See below.

The cons of this place
1. There are 2 kitchens 1 in the main villa and the other in the staff quarters, the kitchen in the villa is not really stocked with basic equipment, we wanted a knife to be kept there to be able to cut fruit and this always made its way to the staff quarters and it would of been nice to have a kettle in the villa as whenever we asked for simple things like tea it would take an hour to be made similarly for breakfast and when we asked dinner to be made at a certain time it was 1 hour later until it arrived.
2. I had property stolen from me which fortunately I did manage to get back but all the staff knew about and they lied about it. I didn't find this out until I was about to leave, I would definitely recommend locking your room doors on heading out.
3. They have a large dog, its a doberman or something similar, I did not get told about this before hand, I like dogs but others in the group didn't, my like of the dog went down after I discovered it was covered in tics

So overall great house, great location but they have a few things to work on. Despite the few problems I would recommend this place to other people for the location and the house. And in terms of issues with the staff, just have patience, its better to have them than not to have any staff, just understand it may take a little time to get things you want.

Management Response
11 Aug 2013
Thank you for your useful and observant comments, always a help when running a villa and we have taken them on board .

The kitchenette is subsequently stocked with the basic equipment for making coffee , tea etc and the staff are aware so please do ask if anything is missing .

The staff do need to access the bedrooms for cleaning etc and this of course is done at your convenience , usually when guest are out . It is advisable to always put valuables out of sight and there is a safe provided.
At times when tidying up things can be misplaced so please be aware and if you can not find anything tell the boys and Ranga , the House manager, immediately.

If you have your laundry washed again things can go astray also as this is managed out of house but by a reputable Swedish lady and we have always been able to solve any problems that have arisen .

The dog is usually housed at Ranga's house when guest are at the villa and only there when we visit the house , so this should not be a problem .

During the rainy season in Unawatuna the sea is unswimmable and rough which also results in bringing rubbish onto the beaches , we are aware of this and try to manage it as best we can . The swimming pool is a great advantage during this season.

As always we strive to please the guest and make your stay pleasant and memorable ... and as Gareth states " A Great House " !
