“We had a wonderful holiday.”
Reviewed 27 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We were welcomed very warmly by Maria and Mike. Throughout the holiday they were excellent hosts. The apartment is beautifully situated, spotlessly clean and well furnished. We walked for miles, enjoyed boat trips, used the free bus pass to got to Cochem and visited Koblenz by taking the local train and generally had a wonderful time. We love Cochem and Beilstein and the butcher/cafe in Poltersdorf. We enjoyed lovely bread from the local bakery, too much cake from the bakery/cafe in Ellenz and lots of lovely meals out in the surrounding area.
Thank you so much Maria and Mike

“A great place to stay with excellent hospitality”
Reviewed 25 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We've just spent a terrific week in this apartment. We were met by Maria as soon as we arrived and shown round the apartment, which is just stunning - the photos don't do it justice. I could live in it! The exposed beams are just fascinating.

Because it's a 16th century listed building, some of the stairs are steep and uneven (and there are a few creaky floorboards!), and we decided that the mezzanine sleeping area was going to be a bit tricky if we needed the bathroom during the night, so we chose to use the beds on the main floor. The open plan layout makes it incredibly spacious, yet it still divides itself up into eating/sleeping/relaxing areas just as well as if it had separate rooms. The bathroom is two steps up, and vast, having originally been part of a separate house, but it's superbly decorated.
We didn't make much use of the kitchen, as we prefer to eat out while on holiday, so it was just breakfast and evening snack, but it is well equipped with sink, dishwasher, oven & induction hob, fridge, and microwave, and of course a range of pots & utensils. Maria even provided milk, tea, coffee & sugar on arrival to save the immediate search for a shop!
The table is large enough to seat 6, and the wardrobe is also vast.

Ellenz doesn't have much in the way of shops other than a bakery which is a 5-minute walk in the morning, but the addresses of all the local supermarkets are provided in the guest information (Mike and Maria also provide a personalised note for each guest). The nearest is Penny in Cochem, 8km away, which is adequate for most things. Aldi is a bit further away.

Many of the houses in the village make wine, including the neighbours, the Dieterichs. Mike and Maria have a cellar which they open to guests some evenings and supply the local wines and beers. Our first cellar evening was shared with two sets of Spanish guests, and we sat chatting until well after 2am! The Dieterichs also have a cellar which opens under the German strausswirtschaft law most evenings. We spent a pleasant evening in there too, and discovered some truly excellent wines - the best wines in Germany are not exported!

There is plenty to see and do in the locality, and a 15 minute walk take you to the ferry across the Mosel to Beilstein; from Beilstein you can get a boat to Cochem or a trip upriver as far as Traben-Trarbach. There is also a bus service, for which Mike & Maria can provide tickets.

The night before we left, Mike & Maria took us on a wine tour, showing us where and how all the processes take place. We learned so much about not only the wines, but the processes and costs involved in making them.

We dearly loved the apartment and the hospitality was terrific - we didn't feel obliged but we did feel welcomed. We will certainly be back! A memorable holiday.

“A quirky little gem”
Reviewed 26 September 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Maria and Mike live on site, and nothing is too much trouble for them. The apartment itself is well equipped, very comfortable, with the added bonus of a "bed deck", the first time we have ever slept above the beams looking down into the living space. It is clearly unsuitable for anyone who has trouble with stairs, 55 we counted from the road to our bed, but the climb is well worth it. The views of the vineyards and the Mosel are wonderful, and the apartment is so quiet being one street back from the river.
Ellenz itself is a pretty village, with wineries a plenty and several restaurants. It does have a bakery but there are no shops in which to buy provisions, Cochem about 4 miles away is the nearest town with any amenities including an ATM. As most transactions are still paid for in cash this is something you need to be aware of and plan for.
The cuisine in Germany is very meat based, red and processed meat still rule. There is a limited amount of fish, but very little for vegetarians! Restaurant quality is good but simple, don't expect variety or Michelin stars!
That said, eating and of course drinking out is very good value for money, and our supermarket shop was cheaper than anywhere else we have travelled in Europe recently.
We would certainly recommend Apartment Riesling without hesitation and hope to return again oneday soon.
