“Peaceful getaway”
Reviewed 24 March 2020 for a stay in March 2020

Sue and Bill provide a wonderful nature filled getaway. We loved every minute of our stay. The birds were amazing. Taking that walk around the billabong everyday was magical. Thank you so much for your hospitality. We would stay again anytime.

It was a wonderful experience for us to welcome you, and to be a part of your long-planned Aussie journey all the way from North Carolina, USA.

You are just the best of guests, and of course you rapidly became so much more, as valued friends with whom we shared so many similar views.

We especially loved the comfortable way you settled into Wombat Bend, as though you'd been here many times before. You loved our wildlife, especially our birds and this new environment with familiar ease that speaks volumes of how inseparable we all are from the natural world, and how more than ever, we must look after it.

Whether you are able to return or not, you have in fact left a large piece of your souls imprinted into the fabric of Wombat Bend, and we are all the richer for it.

Stay safe, with our thoughts,
Sue & Bill & Angus

“The perfect writers retreat and sanctuary”
Reviewed 17 February 2020 for a stay in January 2020

I was fortunate to spend seven nights at The Burrow, and they went by so quickly. Every morning you wake up to birdsong, and throughout the day the view over the billabong changes subtly as different animals come and go. Whether you are staying for a holiday or using this as a writers retreat, The Burrow is the perfect surrounds - peaceful and beautiful without being too quiet or lonely. The breakfasts provided were amazing, and I was incredibly well fed the entire stay. There is lots to see in the surrounding area - restaurants, distilleries, and the TarraWarra art gallery is nearby too. But, if you wanted to spend your whole time at Wombat Bend, there is much to enjoy there too - walks around the billabong, peaceful reading spots, and the cosy cottage itself. Will definitely visit again!

Thank you for your really delightful review, and for being such a fantastic guest. It was great to know how much you enjoyed being in your own creative space, but at the same time not feeling isolated or lonely (Angus would always take care of that !).

We love having writers to stay, knowing that productivity seems to be even more enhanced and inspired by the tranquility of Wombat Bend and its heart beat .. Nature works her own magic for us all.

We're looking forward to your return soon.
warmest wishes,
Sue & Bill and buddy Angus

“Truly a magical place.”
Reviewed 19 January 2020 for a stay in November 2019

Words cannot describe adequately the magic I felt when I visited the Burrow at Wombat Bend. The natural setting with the billabong is home to so many species of birds. It was wonderful to watch and listen to the huge variety of birds from the tiny blue wrens to the raucous cockatoos and parrots. Bill and Sue have created a real paradise here - plants, shrubs, and trees have been chosen carefully to attract a wide variety of species of birds. The dozens of strolls I took around the large property opened up new observations of bird behaviours as well as numerous photo opportunities. Lots of benches around for just sitting and observation if that is your style of a visit. Sitting on the veranda which surrounds the cottage allowed me to fully appreciate the tranquility of the place as the birds routinely waddled, strutted, and flew by totally at ease with my presence; these creatures recognize that they are in a safe and welcoming environment. This truly is a nature lover’s paradise.

The cottage itself is spacious, well appointed with comfortable furnishings, and the library of books on a huge variety of topics is extensive as well. A cozy seating area with lots of beautiful hand made throws, a desk that looks out on the billabong, and a fully equipped kitchen comprise the main room. You can lay in bed (heated mattress pad for added luxury) and look out the large window as birds come to a natural feeder hung from the roof eaves if you wish a lazy lay in. The bathroom comes with exquisite amenities; the shower is huge and natural lighting from windows strategically placed high up along the roof line. Luxury exemplified!

The hosts, Sue Forrester and Bill Molyneux, are so very knowledgeable and welcoming. Questions about birds or plants are welcome; however they stay out of your way unless you ask for their help. If you wish and love dogs they may even let one of their Airedales join you as you walk around seeing everything this natural (but created by Bill and Sue) setting has to offer; otherwise the dogs are quiet and rarely visible

Winter, summer, spring, or fall, the Burrow at Wombat Bend is truly a magical place for anyone!

Thank you! you have really opened your heart and let Wombat Bend pour in with full force.

It's very special to know how comfortable and at home you felt even in just your few days here. You were always with camera and binoculars at the ready, and you captured myriad moments that are the 'take home' treasure to be sifted through at leisure, later on. Thank you for being such a wonderful guest and friend, and for sharing the love you discovered for Wombat Bend with so many others.

Nature needs to be nurtured and cherished, for without it, we are diminished. More than ever before, we must act to protect all that we still have. Nothing is more precious.

“Wish we’d stayed longer...”
Reviewed 28 October 2019 for a stay in October 2019

Literally in the heart of the picturesque Yarra Valley at Dixon’s Creek, the Burrow Is a quiet and peaceful haven. Close to wineries, restaurants and Tarrawarra gallery. Sue provided us with lots of goodies including local cheeses. This was our third visit and hopefully not our last! Clean and attention great attention to detail. Lots of chairs outside with views of the lake and the many birds visiting. And no neighbours!

We loved your summation of this third visit, it's such a treat to have you coming back to our tiny corner of the Yarra Valley, and we definitely hope it won't be your last.

Just being able to absorb true peace and quiet into the soul is restorative; a bit of deep breathing, a slowing of the heart rate, and simply watching the change of light and shadow across the billabong while blue wrens skip around your feet is a very nice way to spend a day. Add some nice local wine and cheese .... the world looks a much better place already !

Cheers, come back soon,
Sue & Bill & Angus/Oscar/Jemima
