We and our 2 friends have just returned from this hotel after a 9 day all inclusive holiday with Shearings Coach tours. We were a bit apprehensive before we went having read so many negative reviews. However we had a lovely holiday and would urge fellow travellers not to be put off by these reviews.
The hotel is in an excellent location on the edge of the lake with truly beautiful views across to Bellagio. Yes it’s an old hotel & the standard rooms which you are allocated, unless you pay for an upgrade, are shabby and in need of decorating. Our room was on the back with a partial view of the mountains. We don’t spend much time in our room whilst on holiday so it was adequate & serviced most days. The beds - 2 singles pushed together, are changed once a week & the towels every 3 days but I’m sure if you requested these to be changed more often then they would be. Some travellers have complained about things not working in their rooms - both ourselves and our friends had issues with things breaking or not working but we reported them as soon as they were noticed and they were repaired or replaced within the hour. If they don’t know they can’t fix it! There is a free safe in the room for AI guests, a flat screen tv, a fridge & there’s a hairdryer in the small bathroom.
The restaurant is big & busy but you soon learn where everything is. Most of the waiters are pleasant & friendly & work very hard to keep things running.
Lunch and dinner was very good with plenty of choice - soup, salads. a different roast every night, fish, pasta, pizza as well as braised meats which were delicious. Yes it’s frozen vegetables but better than tasteless fresh ones left stewing in water.
Breakfast was the poorest meal - very repetitive - always scrambled eggs but not always fully cooked! The bacon & juices were not of very good quality but there’s enough cold choice to choose from & unlimited toast so no one should go hungry. Hot food is only served between 8-9am.
We ate one night at The Lido to celebrate both our friends & our wedding anniversary. We had informed them on booking before we left the UK that it was a special celebration for all of us but they appeared to have little knowledge of this on our arrival!
It’s in a fabulous setting right on the lake but the service was very slow & the food not any better than in the main restaurant. It was a nice change however to have table service & we were given complimentary desserts as it was a special occasion as well as the 20% discount you get for being AI classic guests.
The floating pool is a lovely place to relax for a few hours with spectacular views however it doesn’t open until 10 am. Either take your own towels or buy them for €8 from reception. Swimming caps must be worn in the Lido pool. The drinks package for classic AI at the floating pool is poor - drinks are served in tiny plastic cups & no spirits are available. Free drinks for classic AI customers are available only until 6pm which of course is understandable when others are paying more for Gold and Platinum packages. Sturdier drinks containers for classic AI would be welcomed rather than the small flimsy plastic cups though!
Most public areas in the hotel have character & charm but they are let down by the shabby, dirty & stained cushions that are on a few of the rattan chairs ( which are also ragged) on the sun terrace & enclosed veranda. People have commented on this for many months on TA. It wouldn’t take a lot to wash or replace them to smarten the area up as it’s not really a nice place to sit.
It’s things like this and the shabby rooms & drinks in small flimsy cups available at the pool bar that lets this hotel down. With a bit of TLC and more effort this place could easily be 4*.
Places to see : - Villa del Balbianello - take
the Dotto train from outside the hotel to Lenno - NT members get a decent reduction on the entrance fee so remember to take your cards! It’s a beautiful place with a good free guided tour of the Villa.
The included tours with Shearings are all excellent and a trip on the Bernina express to St Moritz is a must.
Bellagio on the free shuttle boat from the floating pool is a nice half days visit as is Como Market on a Thursday. Take the C10 bus route from outside the hotel but hang on tight - Italian drivers are all they’re said to be!
Again the Dotto train to Menaggio is a nice half day trip.
I can’t end my review without mentioning Paul our driver. His knowledge of the area is incredible & he goes above & beyond what’s expected of a coach driver to ensure everyone has a good day out with him. If you’re lucky enough to travel with him he’ll make your holiday!

Had trouble finding the entrance due to the tour buses. Mass of people trying to check in or check out. Front staff was doing the best they could. The dining hall reminded me of a large cruise ship. Food was below standard. The room was exceptionally small but such a great view of the lake. The pool was overcrowded with families. You could see the hotel must have been grand in its day. But, it looked tired. The housecleaning staff is doing a GREAT job with what they have. If you are looking for a quiet place, this may not be it. The hotel clearly caters to tour groups.

Room Tip: Get a balcony room facing the lake .

We have recently returned from a six day at Hotel Britannia. After reading a lot of negative reviews I was a bit apprehensive about staying here. Yes the bedrooms could do with decorating but overall all it was adequate for the short time we were in the room. Some guests have posted that staff are not very helpful but the ones who served us were helpful and polite. Guests also complained about the food station being a bottle neck with problems getting your food. This was not down to shortage of room it was down to the bad manners of some of the guests blocking walkways no please or thank you when you moved to let them through. The food was always hot and tasty so no complaints about the catering. There were only two minuses and that was the decoration of the bedrooms and you could only get small glasses for your beer. Would I stay here again yes most definitely. Thank you Hotel Britannia and all the staff for a great holiday

Room Tip: Room with a lake view

The hotel itself is very dated and in need of a revamp. The staff were not very friendly and welcoming so we avoided as much communication with them as we could so as to avoid our trip being spoiled. The breakfast was basic but they did have an espresso machine which was a bonus. On a positive note the views were amazing and the pool was on point. Didn't get busy. Both pools looked very clean and well maintained. Soft drinks at the pool bar are twice the price and smaller in comparison to the local shop at the side of the hotel. We preferred the one immediatly opposite the hotel as it seemed more child friendly so the kids could splash about. The views from our room and the pool were outstanding. We didn't eat lunch or evening meals at the hotel, possibly to avoid unfriendly hotel staff, and opted to eat at a little restaurant a 10 minute stroll, in Tremezzo, who were super welcoming. Getting around to different towns along the lake was by speedboat which was fun.

This trip was a quick get away with some friends and my partner who had never been before so I was eager to show them how great the hotel is and the beautiful lake! It was a great surprise to see that since my last trip there is now a resort! The Hotel Britannia as always was beautiful, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food was excellent, the risotto is up there rated with one of the best ive had. The bbq style dinner at the cove was extremely good, the meats were cooked perfectly and the staff couldn't do enough to ensure we had a great experience. As the hotel is now part of a resort we visited the Hotel Bazzoni (new edition to the resort), their bar/cocktail area is a lovely modern social area to relax. The cocktails were delicious, christian the bar man's attention to detail was exceptional. I was very impressed. The lights outside the bar area was a lovely edition in the evening. We were lucky enough to try the food at the hotel and again it did not disappoint and was thoroughly enjoyed! I would recommend the Hotel Britannia and Bazzoni to any family and friends and I will definitely be returning. Thanks again for a wonderful holiday!
