There are several ways in and out of the moat area. we went in via the gate next to tourist information opposite the new market. very peaceful walking round. this is a different side to the old town. Most people walked a short section and went into the old town. then there wasn't anyone until we met a local dog walker. it is possible walk right around to the sea front or St John's gate.

This is by far the best place of historical interest i visited on this island, and for the lowest ticket price! You pay only two euros and you go for a walk of about 2 klm around the Old Town of Rhodes, which is really amazing and huge! You walk on top of the big ancient walls that were used to protect the city, and the view will take your breath away! It really makes you travel through time! A must see!

We did a walk on the walls from the Palace of The Grand Masters; it was amazing to see the city from a different perspective and see little green gardens, ancient houses, and tiny broken pieces of roof tile you are walking over, etc. You can feel the history! In fact I preferred this to the Palace of The Grand Masters! 2 Euros each, takes about 30 minutes. Starts at 12 noon or 3pm, take a hat and water because there is no shade. Buy tickets in the Palace. They open the gates and you walk at your own pace to the exit near St John's Gate. Note that there are no railings and it is extremely high so wouldn't recommend for small children! Otherwise very, very highly recommended! The walls are very wide so it is not worrying if you don't like heights.

These are the most impressive city walls we have ever seen. It is worth walking around the outer perimeter of the moat wall first from Gate Akandia going anti clockwise to Gate d’Amboise and then returning clockwise along the bottom of the moat. The double walls in places show the massive strength of the structure. Small bridges cross the moat in places and are entrances into the city. There is even a tunnel under the inner walls from the old town into the moat near Gate Akandia. You cannot actually walk on the inner walls as these are unsafe. The more impressive section of the walls is the inland section, not the section facing the sea. Give yourself two hours at least to explore fully, and all at no cost.
