We stayed at Hortus for 4 nights. We were only a couple so we had plenty of space to ourselves. The property has been superbly renovated and is equipped with everything you need. Upon arrival we were each treated to a massage from Salvo who also provided us with a lot of helpful information about the area. We didn't get a chance to sample any of the restaurants in Modica as we ate in every night, making use of the excellent kitchen and enjoying a cooking class with Marilena. We also descended many times to the cellar, sampling some of the local wines. The weather was warm so we spent a lot of time relaxing in the large, private garden admiring the view of San Giorgio Cathedral. The location was great - only a short walk into the city centre (the walk down was much easier than up!), and Modica was a good base to explore the surrounding area. Staying at Hortus was a real treat. We would love to return here again (next time we will stay longer) and would definitely recommend it.
Hi, we had a fantastic week in Sicily enjoying the nearby beaches, great food and this little sanctuary in the old town of Modica right next to the cathedral. This is a great hideaway in a lovely part of Italy. After a busy day we returned to a big solid door that opens up to a wonderfully private and relaxing courtyard that you would never know exists. Big thumbs from all the family.

We were lucky enough to be some of the first guests to stay at Hortus. From the moment we walked through the understated (but very stylish) gates, into the lovely, tranquil garden with the fruit and figs trees we knew we’d found somewhere very special.
Hortus blends the old with the new seamlessly. Luca and Paulo have renovated the property using, wherever possible, natural Sicilian materials and stones Light streams into the ultra modern kitchen (with all the fixtures and fittings you would expect) through huge glass doors that open out into the garden with its plunge pool, bbq and breathtaking views of San Giorgio cathedral. Inside you get a sense of how old the property actually is. Many of the original architectural characteristics are not only highlighted, but made into beautiful features of the property. Each of the bedrooms has been themed around the elements and the indoor spa is a revelation.
Much of the furniture has been created by artisan producers for Hortus and they are art pieces in their own right. The huge garden table (made of lava from Mount Etna, I believe), the specially commissioned washbasins in the bedrooms to the antique lace bed throws to name a few are all sophisticated, elegant, artistic, understated yet always functional.
If that is not enough to tempt you, Amalia is on hand to help you organise any/all aspect of your holiday from restaurant recommendations and bookings, to car hire, day trip planning, shopping and, given enough notice, she can even organise a chef to cook for you.
It’s always bittersweet to leave rave reviews about a property, whilst it’s lovely to share your experience with everyone it’s also like sharing a guilty secret. And that’s what Hortus feels like; a beautiful, secret Sicilian hideaway, amongst the most charming, friendly people, in one of the most picturesque cities in Sicily.
Do go, you won’t be disappointed.
