“Fabulous, can't wait to return”
Reviewed 2 September 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We had a fabulous time at La Belardiere; there were eight of us in total including my three young children (6,4 and 2); the abundance of space both inside and out meant they had a lot of freedom in a really safe environment. Kath and Roger were complete naturals at being fantastic hosts and it was a pleasure to talk to them over the week. The gite was beautifully converted and the view from the decking only beaten by the view from the top of the field at the back - sheep, goats, wildflower meadows and fields of sunflowers. The children loved the different outside spaces - hammocks, swimming pool, orchard and being nosy out in the courtyard to see what Roger was up to. His patience with the children was much appreciated. Their joy at discovering a dog and kitten were an added bonus. We only did very limited trips out to the markets and river beaches, to be honest La Belardiere was so lovely it seemed a shame to leave it even for a morning. Thank you Kath and Roger, we will see you again but we'll be staying longer!

“A Little Slice of Heaven....”
Reviewed 12 August 2012 for a stay in July 2012

Of all the self catering accommodation that I have booked for my family over the last 20 years I have to say that La Belardiere was the best of the lot. From the original booking to the stay itself everything was what we would expect and more. The accommodation was magnificent having recently been refurbished, all home comforts were on hand, a real home from home. The location as well was great as everything was close by and easy to find when travelling from the UK. The two Gite's are nestled in a magnificent part of the Loire valley with a pool, gardens, a woodland and above all peace and quiet.

Kath and Roger made us extremely welcome and provided great insight and knowledge of the local area as well as acting as translators on occasion.

“Peace and space in genuine France”
Reviewed 9 August 2012 for a stay in July 2012

When we arrived at La Belardiere, I was quite stunned by the Gites - the buildings and grounds. Kath and Roger have done a beautiful job with their renovation of the old barns and it has quite obviously been a labour of love. Perhaps especially because they live there themselves in their own home, you can see the care that has gone into all aspects of the project. Really, the pictures on their website do not do it justice - at least they do not seem to capture the wonderful intensity of the sunlight reflected by the pale limestone used in these traditional buildings.
Inside, the gites have been beautifully renovated with modern kitchens and bathrooms but much of the original features such as beams and walls retained. They are very spacious and comfortable. In fact that is perhaps one of the best features - they are so generously sized.
The pool is only heated by sunshine, but there seems to be plenty of that around so was a comfortable 26-27 degrees whilst we were there in late July.
The area is mainly agricultural with fields of sunflowers and maize all around, plus woods, forests and the beautiful La Creuse river winding it's way through Saint Remy and then through Les Descartes. The nearest village of St Remy doesn't really have much to offer - just a single restaurant, which we did not visit though looked fine, and slightly disappointingly, no Boulangerie, but the town of Descartes has most necessary facilities - local markets, supermarkets, Boulangeries, coffee shops etc. We really enjoyed the night market at Descartes with food, stalls, bars and live music.
We enjoyed swimming and canoeing in the river and the teenagers (the other Gite had a family with teenage children also) enjoyed being able to cycle off as a group to swim in the river. Kath and Roger have quite a collection of bikes available to borrow. The local roads are all small and pretty quiet so there were no concerns about letting them off on their own. It may be a bit too quiet here for some teenagers, but with a group around they were able to safely explore as a group and had a great time. In fact this is a really good area for cycling, especially road cycling. Off-road mountain bikers might find it rather tame, but the forest tracks are good for young children and beginners. It's also a great area for running with loads of paths and tracks.
We tried, but were rather disappointed with Lesigny’s beach. I think the presence of a lifeguard, buoys marking out the swim area and lots of other people, spoiled the sense of adventure of swimming in the river and of having it too oneself. We swam several times at St Remy however and that was really good.
Being on-site, Kath and Roger were usually available and always very helpful with any query or request and even provided some fresh eggs from their hens and vegetables from their garden.
Kath and Roger are building a little menagerie there - a few sheep and goats in the back field are not noticeable unless you explore that way, but the hens roam around the grounds. They have a wonderfully good natured Airedale Terrier - Boodie (spelling?) and Denis the kitten - though I guess he won't be a kitten for long which is a shame because he was really entertaining and the kids loved him.
This seems like a little corner of paradise. A beautiful spot with wonderful weather and a really relaxed pace of life. Can't wait to go back!
