Where do I even start with The Mairood Resort? My wife and I thought we were only going to spend 1 night here on our way to Trat, but ended up extending for an additional 3 days because we loved it so much!

The resort is tucked away behind a charming fishing village. Strolling around the docks, taking in the brightly colored boats and waving hello to the local kids was one of our favorite activities.

Stepping through the gates of the resort is like entering Doctor Doolittle's backyard! The bungalow rooms, refreshing pool, and open air dining room are scattered amidst gorgeous lush gardens dotted with large cages for exotic birds, rabbits, an adorable pet pig, and more. The room we stayed in was large, beautifully decorated, and had modern AC and appliances.

The owner of the resort is a treasure in and of himself, and was the real reason we decided to extend our stay. Chin has lead an amazing life, and has incredible stories to tell. He is a self made entrepreneur, professional chef, and artistic craftsman. We loved chatting with him, and he even showed us his workshop on the property where he makes beautiful shell art "sailor valentines." He used to be the head chef at his own restaurant, and does most of the cooking at the resort, which was INCREDIBLE. Some of the best food we ate all honeymoon. He is the most accommodating guy you will ever meet, and helped us with everything from arranging transportation to finding cold medicine to mending a torn backpack. When you are with Chin, you don't have to worry about a thing.

Oh yeah, and the resort has bicycles and scooters you can take to explore the many nearby beaches. We found one that was deserted except for several PUPPIES who played with us all afternoon. Seriously, can it get any better?? We can't wait to go back to see Chin at the Mairood Resort, and you should too!

My partner and I spent two nights at Mairood - it wasn't long enough and we cannot wait to return. The whole experience was like our version of paradise.

The resort is located just outside a fishing village, so you immediately get some local colour. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with many exotic trees and plants as well as mangroves set against a backdrop of a lagoon and the sea. Birds abound in the trees and water - as well as in cages because the owner, Chin (a Thai-American) is a passionate animal lover and rescuer of abandoned or injured creatures of all sorts.

We stayed in a the upper floor of "Heaven in the Garden" a rambling house with a huge verandah featuring Nantucket-style furniture (the owner, Chin, lives part of the year on the island of Nantucket in the US) that was perfect of reading, drinking or watching birds against a backdrop of water views. The only downside is that there was a fair bit of plastic in the water floating down the lagoon from the fishing village.

Chin was the consummate host, ensuring everything was always ok before we even had to ask. This ranged from proffering bikes to cycle to a local beach (that had foodstalls, an easy 7km ride) , to getting fresh cold coconuts, to organising scrumptious dinners in the resorts small restaurant.

Mairood isn't for everyone - but those who really want that "off the beaten track" experience with natural surrounds I couldn't rate it higher.

Room Tip: Heaven in the Garden, top floor - huge with wonderful views.

Coming here is like arriving in paradise! This wonderful garden, the nice pool and the only noise is birds singing. We really loved our stay here. All the staff is caring about you and Chin is a very good cook. We got enough bottled drinking water for free and had the choice for breakfast between American Breakfast or Muesli with homemade yoghurt all served with fresh fruits and coffee or tea and water. A perfect start for your day. Our room was spacious and the aircon did cool very well but did not blow directly on the bed. So this was very convenient. The bathroom was very big and had a nice big shower. Our bungalow had a small terrace with view of the pool and garden. And even from our bed we had a view of the garden.
We could borrow bicycles to explore the surrounding. They were in quite good condition, so we had a nice ride. The village itself is worth the travel! It's a fishing village with open houses built on stilts. Here you get a feeling of how Thai life is.
Mairood Resort is a very quiet place with lots of animals and not much to do. But it's a place where you can meet people who love to travel and who have many stories to tell. It's a place where you can think and find solutions. It's a place to take a rest and find yourself. I will return for sure!!! Chin thank you and your team for making this few days unforgettable! See you again!

The owner is a person of Thai origin with a US citizenship and has been running a very successful restaurant business in the US for the past 17 years. Interacting with him is a pure delight. He is a very interesting person and his very fluent english makes it a delight conversing with him.He being a professional chef clearly reflects in the food he puts out. It might be just worth it to stay there to eat the delicious food that he makes and to take some thai cooking tips if one is interested.

The resort is located amidst a fishing village. The location is great to explore the yet unexplored and pristine region of Trat and near about. The rooms are large, clean, comfortable and the a/c is very effective. Between the cottages there is a lot of green and a large number of cute, domestic pets.

I would avoid booking the mangrove rooms because they are not upto the mark and I hope the owner refurbishes them at the earliest as its the only blip. To be fair he charges sub 20$ for those rooms.

If one is not looking for an ocean view resort with cookie cutter rooms and one wants to stay within a real thai fishing village interacting with the fisher folks even maybe buy the catch of the day and get it cooked and want to try real thai hospitality with a western touch would highly recommend the place.

The owner also helps organise pick up a nd drop from airport/trat/cambodian border at very affordable rates. Hope to visit the place soon.

We have been to Thailand a few times and wanted something more genuine. This is it. Low season so it was very quiet here. Chin, the owner, organised transportation from Bangkok airport and was excellent at communicating with us throughout. The room was fabulous. Yes, the shower isn't very powerful but the rooms are filled with character and charm that you just dont get in large hotels. The resort had an array of pet friends including Yaya the pig. All friendly. Throughout our stay the service was simply perfect. We ate each night in the restaurant and the food was fabulous. The children were catered for and Chin and his staff took care to learn our children's names and talked to them and answered lots of questions! The gardens are well manicured and delighful to spend time looking at whilst having a swim. Although we didn't actually eat in the fishermen's village we did have a wander. Noone speaks English here but everyone was incredibly friendly. We bought snacks and drinks etc in the shops.

In conclusion, the best 4 nights we have spent in Thailand. Genuine. Well priced. Perfection. Thanks Chin for our fabulous stay.
