Saw the huge crater at the base of Diamond Head. Too hot and too old to do the hike! Beautiful scenery everywhere.

This is something that I really never saw myself doing when on Oahu but I was weary of people asking me if I had done it. It was okay - the view from the top was gorgeous but the walk up was pretty boring and crowded. The guy or gal who owns the shave ice stand is making a killing because everyone runs for it after the hot hike. The ice isn't that good...actually, it isn't good at all but it was cold and wet and that counted. We saw two pineapple employees in a shouting match...that was more entertaining than the hike.

This was a fun hike that was completed in 2 hours round trip including time spent at the top exploring the WW bunkers and soaking in the gorgeous views. Most people can do this hike without too much exertion and it was nice to get away from the busy city/ beach.

Lovely little hike, it is worthwhile getting there early to avoid walking in the mid-day sun. If you are on a budget there are buses from Waikiki (number 23?) which take you straight to the monument for a few dollars. You can then do a self guided hike from there. I went with a guide and learnt lots about the area and Hawaiian history which was great.

So many reviews .... The higher you go, the more extreme will be your rescue if you have a medical issue. I saw some pretty out of shape persons as well as elderly individuals near the summit. With the steep stairs, tunnel and narrow path at times, I would not wish to be a first responder to a stroke or heart attack. Give your cell phone or camera to a traveling companion and let them take the summit photo. Besides, there is a lot of jousting for an unobstructed view at the top.
