“Beautiful, Historic Home”
Reviewed 2 February 2017 for a stay in January 2017

Manoa Valley Inn is a very well-kept home that is on the United States Department of the Interior Register of Historic Places, located in the valley it is named after. Specifically, it is in the foothills just west of the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus, which is a lush green zone that receives a healthy amount of rain to support the dense tropical foliage found in the area. The home is a large post-1910 styled American home which has period-correct interior appointments that are well maintained. The neighborhood is quiet, with Japanese residents/employees living in the home. Their service (and manners) were excellent. There was an excellent view of the Waikiki skyline from my South-facing room with a pleasant, well-appointed bathroom attached. There is a sitting room on the second floor next to the rented room with large windows that has the same view.

The lanai in the back is charming, as is the pool area. The pool does not seem to be heated all that much. The couch and bed by the pool were nice, but the couch fabric was dusty and dated. My only other cons were that there was minor floor and furniture damage that is in need of repair in the room, but certainly nothing that takes too much away from the experience. The air-conditioning did not work in the room, but open windows at night made for a comfortable rest. A simple floor fan would be a good addition. Also, be mindful this is an old tri-level home that is built from wood: When others walk, everyone can hear. There should be a sign stating “no shoes on room floors 10pm to 7am”. The furniture in the bedroom is period specific, and the bedding was first-class.

Breakfast is included in the price, and the food is good. I really liked the presentation. They set up breakfast on the lanai. Even coffee and tea are a nice experience, right down to the china they use. I am a dog-lover, and the dogs that live in the house made me feel more at home. Particularly, there is a mix of what looks like some kind of pinscher and Chihuahua named “Peace” who was great. He yelled at me when I first walked in, but we became best-buddies as soon as I got down to his level. He’ll bring you a squeaky toy to play tug-o-war if he likes you.

Overall I had a pleasant, memorable experience (if not brief) with this stay. The people and the pets are equally as charming as this historic house. I recommend staying here, and the pricing represents somewhat of a value in this segment.
