Quinntesential Buffalo

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Aug 2024via mobile
Loved my 5 day stay at this quintessential Buffalo hotel. The developer has done an excellent job refurbishing the complex and the historical touches are abundant throughout this architectural marvel. The grounds are well kept and there are quiet places to sit and reflect on this historic landmark. The staff was very friendly and professional. The cuisine onsite was delicious as well. I will definitely be back again.

Room Tip: No mini-fridge. Not every room has a decent view.

We booked this hotel due to its Historic location but unfortunately we’re not able to enjoy it.
We booked 3 rooms for 4th of July weekend. We got to the hotel after midnight and once we got to the check-in desk the clerk asked our Last name and he confirm that we have 3 rooms. We were asked to wait few minutes and we waited for 3 hours(because eventually we went back home). In the meanwhile my husband went to re-park our car and he saw the clerk getting in his vehicle and driving off. He thought maybe someone else will come to help us while we were waiting but no one came. ( we left in the middle of night after waiting for 3 hours)There was no one there , no security, NO ONE. We had eight kids with us and we were stranded in the hallway.
Anyone could enter the building and exit. No one was protecting the building from thieves, criminals ext…
And cherry on the top. You can’t get hold of management of the hotel it’s been over months, I left messages and haven’t heard anything from anyone!!!
Do not to stay at this historical hotel because you’re not guaranteed a room even if you pay and your life is in danger from possible intruders!!!

This former building for the insane turned hotel is located within a campus still dealing with patients with mental health and addiction challenges. For this reason alone we never felt entirely at ease here.

The building is simply stunning having been sympathetically restored and retaining many of its original features. One could almost feel the presence of inpatients and staff busying through the long wide corridors and other public areas. There is a very interesting museum on the ground floor giving great insight into its history and transformation, and huge credit to all those public and private organisations and people whose passion, talent, commitment and financing brought this part of this magnificent structure back life. There is still much more to do with two thirds of the building still in a state of disrepair but hopefully the turnaround story will continue.

In fairness, we were only in Buffalo for the purpose of my daughter sitting the NY State Bar exams so it was not a pleasure trip as such.

However, during our stay, we could not help thinking that the hotel was underachieving and could be so much better than it is. For example, the restaurant, Cucini, never seemed to be open. There are a good variety of restaurants in the neighbourhood and we loved Daniela’s opposite the hotel grounds. The hotel staff kept talking about the complimentary continental breakfast - usually code for it isn’t up to much - and it really wasn’t. The same pastries, the same egg frittata, granola, juices, weak coffee etc which became so tedious by the 3rd day that we no longer bothered. And all self serve in a dreary windowless room more akin to what you’d find in a youth hostel. For the cost of the stay here, we would’ve expected a good and varied selection of fresh foods served in the restaurant.

The bedrooms are a good size, well appointed and the beds are very comfortable. We would’ve appreciated a mini fridge but there was not one. The shower leaked badly onto the bathroom floor as the sealing had worn so needed attention. Housekeeping was sometimes non existent but the housekeeping staff were very sweet and friendly.

In summary, the hotel is definitely worth a visit for the history and museum but we would not recommend staying here for the prices they charge.

Dear Guest,
Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us at The Richardson and taking the time to provide your feedback. We appreciate your kind words and advice. The restaurant recently underwent a change and is no longer Cucina, but is it The Richardson Bar. We don't have food options on Mondays and Sundays, however that is changing as of this coming week. We are also working adamantly on getting a mini fridge in each room (however mini fridges are available at the front desk upon request) and on revamping our breakfast options. Thanks again for choosing to stay with us and we hope to see you again in the near future!

Wouldn't recommend unless you like being canceled. Booked thru Hotels.com. Received one communication from the hotel regarding my special request for a quiet room via email, so they knew about the booking and my request. Then several DAYS later, I get an email saying the hotel is overbooked and they have moved my reservation to their sister property. While I'm grateful to find out before my arrival, I do not think it's appropriate for them to automatically rebook without my input. The email said they tried to call, but I had no missed calls. How is it suddenly overbooked now? Seems shady in my opinion. I have personally canceled the reservation now and am awaiting my refund. Recommend anyone considering this hotel to think twice before booking.

Room tip: Avoid booking

Hi Heidi,
We are deeply sorry for the inconveniences you faced during your booking process with us. Admittedly, we were having a problem with third party booking sites (such as Hotels.com) and our own booking system which has since been resolved. Rest assured you will most definitely receive your refund and we hope that you choose to stay with us again soon! Sorry again and thank you for your feedback.

For such a beautiful and expensive hotel it is lacking in amenities. There is no mini fridge, no microwave, no extra blankets or towel, no extra toilet paper, exactly 2 coffee pods for the coffee maker. Our showers lacked seals and leaked water all over the bathroom floors. Breakfast was an immense disappointment- none of the usual fare: no muffins, waffles, cereal, only egg was quiche, only gluten free bagels. Went went to several of the nearby coffee shops. The dinner was delicious. They did not know how to handle our check in and check out because we booked through Hotels.com. We never received a receipt from them after they had problems and told us they would email it to us. We had to dispute charges- they charged $0.10 per security deposit, and a weird random charge of $210 and change which has not been resolved. The manager claims it doesn't show in my account as a charge or balance do. He says it is an "authorization" and my credit card should not have handled it as a charge. Anyway, the dispute is now pending with my credit card company. Although everyone was very nice, the front desk did not know how to do their job, and the manager mentioned that he "was just filling in".

I hardly ever leave negative reviews for small local businesses, but my experience with the Richardson was so bad that I feel morally obligated to share it with others in case anyone is considering staying with them for an important event.

In December of 2023 I reserved a special room with a King-sized bed for my wedding night which was 8-2-24. I suggested all of my out of town family and friends stay in the hotel which I have always found really impressive and wanted to experience.

On 8-1-24, the day before my wedding, I got an email from the Richardson telling me they had overbooked and were transferring me to another hotel, miles away. This was obviously devastating news. I responded right away and called them. The woman who answered my call told me there was nothing they could do, they had overbooked by 30 rooms (who DOES THAT?!, how irresponsible!). I cried and asked to speak with someone else, who eventually told me they would reinstate my room and bump someone else from my family.

When I went to check in that night they told me they had no more rooms with king beds, so my husband and I spent our wedding night sleeping in two small separate beds.

To be clear, I didn't just request a room with a king sized bed, I requested and reserved and paid for a specific special room with a king bed to make our wedding night special.

On top of all this, they charged us the same price they quoted us for the King Corner room.

All of that said, the room we had was very nice and clean, and the hotel itself was just as impressive on the inside as it was on the outside. So if you are traveling alone and/or don't mind the possibility of being bumped last minute to another hotel then it was a cool place to stay. But I wouldn't count on them holding your reservation for anything meaningful or important to you.

Room tip: Don't count on them keeping your reservation.
