Pros- Very clean, historic and nice building.

Cons- Booked a King bed room for my wife and I a month prior for our anniversary. Showed up to the hotel to be told they were overbooked and a King room was not available. Some communication would have been nice prior so we can find an alternative option. But no. My information was on file. The point of the king bed was for my wife and I to share a bed. Anyways we were offered a lesser room (instead of an upgrade) with two full size beds and told our stay would be discounted for the inconvenience when we checked out. She said she would put a note on our account. We reluctantly took it as it was getting later in the afternoon and we had dinner reservations and no time to get another room.

The following day at checkout a different desk person said there was nothing they can do for us with a discount because we paid through a booking site (like 99% of normal people). We feel lied to and misled. I advise anyone booking at this hotel to not have any expectation of getting when you purchase. They will lie to you to appease you when you’re unhappy about the bait and switch and then they will lie to you when they say that can’t do anything to rectify the matter. There is always a solution when it comes to customer service and The Richardson Hotel failed miserably.

Aside from lack of communication on my room availability, lying, baiting and switching, not having a room fridge and being stuck with two small beds for my anniversary the hotel room was clean and nice

Astounding renovation of a huge iconic property in Buffalo. Beautiful spaces. Each room different. Watch the movie on the ground floor about the history of the property. Serene spaces. A one of a kind unique property. We ordered a refrigorat a cost of 25 dollars. This saved us from the mostly closed hours at the bar. Breakfast was free and good with a perfectly adequate selection. Free parking.

My wife and I traveled to Buffalo for my aunt’s 90th birthday we made reservations at the Richardson Hotel ( 400 Forest Ave) the old mental hospital. After traveling all day we arrived on June 26 2024 to a room with an air conditioner that did not work the window in our room did not open the temperature in our room was over 80 degrees, We complained and requested a different room, we were told no other room was available but that they could provide us with a fan which they did, we both had a miserable nights sleep, the next morning I was going to take a shower and noticed tooth paste on the bottom of the tub, apparently the guest before brushed his or her teeth in the bathtub. But at any rate the bathtub was not cleaned. We complained and then checked out we went to another hotel. If any of my friends or relatives are traveling to Buffalo we don’t recommend this hotel. Stay somewhere else..

I stayed her with a block of other guests as part of a family event.
The building is in a strange location; it is on the campus of a psychiatric center. The nearby neighborhood is kind of sketchy but nicer spots are not too far either.
The rooms are large and the building is architecturally interesting. Unfortunately, the hallways are wide and very noisy. It is hard to get a good nights sleep with all the noise in the hallways.
The real problem was that I returned the next day after checking in in the afternoon after having Ben at a family event in the morning. When I got to my room, it would not open so I went to the front desk where they informed me that I was only supposed to be there for one night. There’s no way I would’ve made a reservation for only one night, since the family event was going through the whole weekend. Be it as it may, they told me that the hotel was going to be full that night and I had until 3 o’clock to get out of the room. They made no effort to try to find another place for me to be. They made no apologies about any possible misunderstanding. And I found myself having to scramble to find a place to stay that night. By the way, when I checked in, they never asked how many nights I was staying. If they had asked that simple question I would’ve found another place so that I didn’t have to switch in the middle.
There are lots of places to stay in Buffalo, this would not be one of them I would recommend.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Richardson and taking the time to provide such helpful feedback. Part of what makes the building unique is that it was a former psychiatric hospital that was converted to a hotel, but I understand your concerns about the sketchiness of the surrounding area and we are currently working on figuring out a security situation so all guests feel safe. We sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you faced during your stay and want to make this situation right. Please contact (301) 452-1467 to figure out a solution that appeases you. We hope to see you again in the near future!

A lovely hotel, it was built in the late 19th Century and features 15” high ceilings and two enormous towers as well as grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Also walkable to to Buffalo’s terrific modern art museum, and with a very helpful staff. Interestingly, the building was originally the home of the New York State Home for the Insane—what could be more unique!

The front desk staff were terrific and the room was quite comfortable but the place is really odd and everything feels a little off. The restaurant and bar weren't open (on Memorial Day weekend!), the heat was actually on in the long hallways, and the Christmas decorations were still up out front. It was great being able to walk to the local art museum and Elmwood Avenue.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Richardson and taking the time to write such helpful feedback. The Christmas decorations you mentioned are actually art pieces by local Buffalonian artists, but have since been removed as we recognized they did in fact appear to provide a Christmas decoration vibe. We sincerely appreciate your business and hope to see you again in the near future!
