Attraction details
Owner description: The Martin House Complex (Buffalo, NY, 1903-05) exemplifies Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie House ideal and ranks as one of his finest residential works. Designed for Larkin Soap Company executive, Darwin D. Martin, the complex is a one-of-a-kind composition consisting of the main Martin House, the smaller Barton House, a carriage house with chauffeur’s quarters and stables, a glass-roofed conservatory linked to the main house by a 100-foot pergola, and a gardener’s cottage integrated architectural masterwork. Tours explore the buildings, surrounding landscape, and an extensive collection of art glass and furnishings, all designed by Wright, which together form a totally integrated architectural masterwork. We welcome you to this National Historic Landmark.

This is a remarkable complex and a fascinating story of its original build and its renovation and rebuild at over $50 million. Not only a story of FLW but also his lifelong friend and benefactor, Darwin Martin, a true family man. Don’t miss it. Well worth the two hours spent touring and listening to the knowledgeable docents.

Spent the morning at the Darwin Martin House. Our guide knew so much history and was able to talk about how the house fit in the neighborhood. The wisteria tile on the fireplace was amazing as was the pergola. Definitely worth a visit!

After viewing a good video about Frank Lloyd Wright and Darwin Martin, we took an excellent tour with a tour guide who is very knowledgeable and engaging about his subject. He explained Wright's design choices, imparted history of the Martin house, and told us of the research and rebuilding that is ongoing at the site. The house is typical of FLW, but we always find features to appreciate at each FLW site that we tour. Be sure to notice Wright's solution to housing Martin's book collection.

My wife and I visited on a Tuesday afternoon in June and really enjoyed seeing and learning about the unique architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Our docent (Ellie) did an excellent job of explaining the various nuances of the design and the history of the people involved. We took the 2 hour tour - and it seemed to go by very quickly. The comprehensive renovation/restoration of the property is almost complete. The modern visitors center immediately adjacent to the complex offers the visitor a lot of visuals (photos) of the building of the homes and of the original owners - and of course has restrooms. You tour through the gardeners house, as well as the main house. The third house of the complex should be opening shortly. No photos are allowed inside the buildings. The buildings are furnished. Free street parking is available adjacent to the complex; in a residential neighborhood. The complex is also very near the Zoo - if you're also inclined to visit there.
