Clean / Friendly - A Little Noisy

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 03 Oct 2023
On a recent trip to The Big E, our family stayed at the Sheraton Springfield. This isn't the first time we stayed there, so something to be said that we are repeat customers.
The draw back is the noise. 1) Depending on the room you get, you may have to deal with the traffic from I-91 and the service roads. 2) It's an atrium hotel, so any sound will echo, especially guests that do not hold, but slam, their room doors. 3) The music. Dear Sheraton Springfield, there is no reason to have the music that plays in the lobby, to be also playing at each floor's elevation bank. See (2) about how the noise echo.

I would stay here again but would be prepared to ask for a room not overlooking the highway, but, if that is what you get, bring ear plugs and use the AC/Heater or a white noise app.
Date of stay: October 2023
Room Tip: Try and ask for a room that does not overlook I-91

Check in was fine and that is where it went down hill quickly. While it was hot and humid outside, it was pleasant in the lobby and expected similarly in my room.
1st room, walked in and humid, damp and smelled musty. The thermostat read 72 but was set to 68. Barely any air was coming out of the vents, so I called down to report it to the front desk. They sent an engineer up who did a couple tweaks to the unit in the room and pulled out the filter to check it. The filter was an inch thick of crud and obviously hadn't been changed in a year. The engineer was optimistic and asked that I give it an hour to see if the temps start to come down. Well, in 45 mins it actually went up 2 degrees! I went down to the front desk and asked to be moved to another room, which I was after expressing the frustration.
2nd room, was an identical experience...even down to the cruddy filter being pulled out by the same engineer. He apologized and was embarrassed. If all the HVAC units had the same filter condition, no wonder the HVAC wasnt keeping up. Shows the lack of PM maintenance being provided with minimal staff.
After watching the temps go up again, I went downstairs to speak to the front desk to see if I could get another room or determine if its an entire hotel issue. Another person was already at the desk complaining.
I expressed my frustration once again and was trying to get settled in after an entire day of flying and jumping planes. The person at the front desk didnt seem to believe me that this room was experiencing the same thing and asked me to go back to my room and he would come up himself to check. 10 mins later he arrives with another engineer who points a laser at the vent and sees that its not pushing out cold enough air...but he insists that the temp in the rooms will improve because he turned on some dehumidifiers in the hallways.
After another 45 mins, it was swampy in the room and I couldnt take it anymore. I canceled my reservation and moved to another hotel. Within a few minutes I was in a nice comfortable room and ready to take a shower after a long day!
Not sure there was an immediate fix to the air conditioning/quality however, there should have been a better plan to accommodate the customers impacted....instead of acting like you werent telling the truth. I can honestly say I will never be back and will look at other options when I am in town.

Room tip: Check the AC in hotter seasons....and check the AC filter when you walk in, that will tell you what you need to know.

The rooms are muggy, humid (and I’m from Miami). Even the carpet and sheets feel damp. AC doesn’t work well, only goes below 70 if you’re lucky. Rooms are dark. This is a decent place to stay in winter, but go somewhere else during the summer. And no water to drink in the gym? This entire place needs a huge renovation.

I sent an email directly to the hotel, respectfully describing a few problems we encountered during our stay, but never received a response. This lack of communication has been a big disappointment.

Stayed here for two nights while in town for a conference. It was okay for that purpose but I wouldn't book again if I was in the area for a leisure trip. I usually like Sheratons but this one is showing its age and is strangely dark everywhere, even in the rooms with all the lights on. However, it was clean, the staff were super nice, and the location was great for exploring downtown.

My main concern though was with the motion-controlled air conditioner in the room. I'm from a humid/hot state and will admit that I like my rooms to be cool and crisp, especially when I sleep. Unfortunately, my room was stuffy and warm when I checked in and despite me turning the thermostat down, it stayed that way when I was gone or when I went to sleep. I thought something was wrong at first but the staff explained that it stopped cooling after not detecting motion for 30 minutes. Eventually I looked up the model number on the thermostat and figured out how to bypass the motion detector so it would stay cooler and I could actually get some sleep. Maybe it's a non-issue for you but if you're like me and need it to be cool (or at least prefer the option of personal comfort), then just be cautious when booking in the summer months.

Dear sarapricex3,

Thank you for sharing your experience at our hotel. While all of your feedback is greatly appreciated, we love to see your appreciation of our cleanliness, staff (who we are very proud of) and location.

We are truly very sorry for the issue with the thermostat in your room. We did find an issue that has since been resolved. The system is designed to run after entry. Lack of movement in the room should not affect this. Once the thermostat detects egress, it will then reduce heating or cooling. We are truly sorry that you encountered this issue, but kudos on the bypass! We are also sorry that this team member did not have a proper understanding of the system. We will work on some additional training.

Again, thank you for being our guest and for your review. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Best,

Stacey Gravanis

Our night's stay was a great experience. The 1 King bed guest room was a nice size and great value for the price. The only drawback was the "mobility accessible room with bathtub." It is difficult entering and exiting the small tub. Also, with the new soaps and conditioner pump bottles hanging off the walls, the limited space is significantly reduced for turning around. A wand-style showerhead would have improved some of these concerns, but this was not an option at this hotel. Of particular note, the room service was excellent.

Room tip: Note: The mobility-accessible room is quite a distance walk from the elevator.
