This excursion was included with our cruise and it is a must see. You are above the bears in a natural habitat and I could have spent all day watching their antics Not crowded and educational information provided. If you have children, they will love it.

This was one of the highlights of our trip. When we were there, it wasn't crowded....and I was impressed with the thoughtfully put together (and large) habitats these bears have, and a chance to observe them doing things ranging from one of them playing with her stuffed bear, to going for a swim and scratching her big back on a stump in the water. At feeding time for the 3 black bear, the eagles lurked close at hand ready to snatch up any piece of meat the bears did not get. Just seeing so many eagles was astonishing. The Coastal Brown Bears are gorgeous - I hadn't known about these - larger than grizzlies. It is also in a beautiful setting, as is pretty much everything here. We spent a lot of time watching these majestic creatures. The coastal browns made the black bears look small. Their handlers were so nice with them, and the top bear expert was a wealth of information and also the bear Toby really enjoyed interacting with her.

This amazing British couple have been working tirelessly along side with the owner a native Alaskan to save bear cubs that are orphaned. These cubs would be killed as a matter of policy by Fish and Game. This is an up close and personal attraction.

I’ve been to Sitka 3 times and the first place I visit is the Fortress. It is so refreshing to be there and share in the love, respect and excitement that the staff have for these beautiful bears. They are so knowledgeable and are happy to talk about their mission, the bears and plans for the sanctuaries future. If you visit Sitka, the Fortress is a must. You won’t be disappointed. The bears will make you laugh (they can be quite silly), ohh and ahh. It makes my heart happy that this sanctuary exists for these orphaned bruins. Keep up the good work and I will most definitely be back. Again and again!

We didn’t sign up for the ship “excursion” but while we were walking around town we decided to go anyway. It was a $17.00 cab ride, and took about 10 minutes. No cell service up there so the cab driver knew to come back in about 45 min. Thats plenty of time to take in the bears and the many Bald Eagles that are also there hoping to grab leftover snacks. The folks working at the center are knowledgeable and engaging. You can tell they love what they are doing there. The center relies heavily on donations. There is a restroom, and a small gift shop. The staff is happy to call a cab for you or let you use their gift shop phone. Well worth it! If you can, book the excursion and it’ll save you the cab fare!!
