My Protestant friends and I thoroughly enjoyed Ascension Sunday services here last month. The priest wasn’t just going through the motions of delivering a band homily for tourists. He gave us all a challenging message to meditate on during the coming week, and did so with humor and reason.

This wonderful old cathedral sits on a large tract of land that is well landscaped and has many statues to see. Walk on the maze trail and experience the twists and turns of life. Spend time looking at the front doors as they depict many scenes. The view from down the street at night is awesome.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a must see for any visitor to Santa Fe. Over my many years of vacationing in Santa Fe, I never miss a chance to stop in or attend Mass there. Whenever I bring a first time visitor there, they are always duly impressed with the sculpture garden stations of the cross and the stunning and recently restored architecture of the church itself. It is second only to Notre Dame in Paris in my book as cathedrals go with St. Pat's in NYC a close third. Regardless of your faith or lack thereof, it's worth visiting for historical context and sheer beauty. Of course, the spirituality of the place is overwhelming for believers. Whenever I go there to pray and remember departed loved ones, tears fall.

If you are in Santa Fe for even the weekend, you must stop and see this beautiful cathedral. Just the doors are worth a stop. Very lovely and well maintained.

You simply can't visit downtown Santa Fe without visiting the Cathedral. From it's architecture to its artwork, the feeling of peace you feel once you enter the doors is undeniably divine!! A must see for whether or not you are Catholic!
