“Smooth gentle sailing to watch the evening sun”

The Schooner, Spike Africa, Friday Harbor, san Juan Islands
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We decided to do the Spike Africa sail that simply ran from 6:30pm till 8:30 pm. It was pretty inexpensive at $39.00 per person, and wouldn't take up too much of our time.
It's a fun ship to be on at 80 feet long, they even fired off this teeny tiny canon for us while we were on the ship, it was tiny but very loud, so that was fun.
We mainly sailed nearby Friday Harbor, Brown Island, not sure if we ventured as far as Shaw Island, but it was nice and relaxing. It definitely got cold towards the end of our cruise, so I would suggest to anyone doing this, to bring a jacket, we were all glad we had one.
You can buy the tickets right in downtown Friday Harbor at 4 Front Street, right next to one of the restaurants (I think the Cask & Schooner Restaurant?). They definitely get booked up in the summer, so you have to make reservations in advance!

Our family of 5, including 3 adult children, went on the evening cruise. It was a still evening and we motored about with some sailing.
We brought snacks and beverages as recommended.
After a brief introduction of the crew, we were on our way.
The sail was unsatisfying because the crew had minimal interaction with the guests. There was no overall info given about the beautiful 40 year old schooner and no info shared about what we were seeing as we glided through the water. The crew looked bored and disinterested, except for the naturalist on board who answered our questions.
Some brief commentaries would have made the trip much more interesting.
While we had a good time as a family, we all were joking about how unsatisfying it was.

My wife and I sailed all day on Spike Africa. The crew is entertaining, competent and very helpful. Skipper Kenny found the Orcas that were in the area and we had an exciting and unexpected close view of them after they finishing eating. My experience is that whales will approach a sail boat, but stay away from dangerous (to them) motor boats. The balance of the day was a great sail on a comfortable schooner!

We took the evening sail. Beautiful boat and very kind crew. Bring layers, it's cold! -- but totally worth it seeing the sun go down on the water. Would definitely recommend.

**As a side note, we had planned to grab a little grub in town after sailing but almost every kitchen closes at 9!

We booked the "Spike Africa" as a must do on our San Juan Island vacation. It was a super day to be out on the ocean. There wasn't much wind, so really going at a clip didn't happen. This did not matter as it was nice just to soak up the sun and scenery. We love wooden sailing ships and this did not disappoint. The crew chatted with us but responded immediately to the captain's directions. A good blend of friendly, casual and competent crew. We brought our own lunch and ate in the galley, which was a great addition to the entire ambiance of this ship's experience. We were allowed to hoist the sails and sit in the captain's chair.

The ship provides sitting pillows and blankets. I recommend this experience to anyone, especially those who enjoy wooden ships.
