We went to the final four and finals of the NCAA tournament. It was weird bc it is definitely not built for basketball. I was informed it was originally intended for football which makes sense. You are definitely not on top of the action more the feeling that you are far away from the court. The concessions was alright-prepackaged food and frozen food-the pretzels came in a wrapper and not warm at all. No escalators so you walk up many flights of stairs to get to the third floor.

Attended the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four. Appreciated that the games, Fan Fest and Music Fest were all downtown adjacent to each other.

The Alamodome itself wasn't impressive. There seemed to be adequate number of restrooms, but concessions were limited and had long lines. I've attended 8 other Final Fours and the other stadiums were better in terms of sight lines for the court and video screens. Didn't seem to be any escalators to get to upper levels -- had to use stairs up and down.

Did seem to be used to moving large crowds efficiently. Lines for security were long but moved quickly with many metal detectors.

Sorry, but the Alamodome is just not a good venue for the state BB playoffs. It was built in the early 1990’s in an effort by San Antonio to attract a professional football team and then later was billed as a multi-purpose facility. It is converted to be used for the UIL State Basketball Tournament by pushing the court to one end of the stadium and then erecting portable stands on the open-field side. It works - just not very well. The Spurs tried it for a while but soon became disenchanted with the facility and moved down the road and built their own facility. The good points: San Antonio is a great town and easy to get around in as compared to Austin, parking is good at the stadium, lodging is plentiful (of course helped by the fact that hardly anyone comes to the tournament anymore), and there are plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Although I miss the Drum and even Gregory Gym (shows my age) I agree that the tournament probably needed to be moved out of Austin. South by Southwest made lodging super expensive if, in fact, you could find any at all. The UIL blamed sagging attendance on SXSW which was probably true, but now in San Antonio, it is probably a third of what it was in Austin. SXSW may be the problem but the Alamodome is not the answer.

I looked at the other Final Four reviews and agree with all of them, though I didn't have anyone falling asleep on me. This was the second Final Four I've attended here and this one was much better than the first where the court was at one end of the dome. This configuration allowed for more seats to be sold but there are a lot of bad seats when it comes to basketball. Another quibble is that the main scoreboard and the scoring information posted around the perimeter weren't linked to the same computer so they often displayed different information - how odd. Finally, it's a nightmare exiting the arena. We were on the top level and finally bailed out with others and took the emergency steps down. That helped some but we were still in a mass of people doing a slow shuffle down the exit road. That may not be an issue with other events but it is the worst exit experience I've ever had from an arena of this size.

Thanks for reading. I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below if you’ve found this helpful.

I visited the Alamodome for the final four championship this year. I have to say I was not overly impressed. They did a great job with the game and all the set up but I didn’t find the arena to be anything impressive. The concessions were minimal with very few options. On a positive note there are many hotels within walking distance so if you’re staying nearby you can avoid driving.
