We were really disappointed in the River Walk. And let me tell you, YOU WILL WALK!! I've always seen restaurants and shopping and music and showing it as "the place to be" on TV and ads. The area we saw was all restaurants. One after the other, well you only eat once! Very few shops down on the river level and they are mostly tourist trap junky kind of items. If you climb the stairs and go up to street level it's stores like Macy's etc. Not local shops. You better bring along bug spray because you will be doing a slap dance if you stand still for a minute. The river boat does not run very late and it only goes once an hour. You would think with such a popular tourist place there would be a boat every 20 minutes but no! The regular boat ride you will not get any "points of interest or information" from the driver. They are not allowed. If you want to know any history you have to pay for a guided tour. There are several "payment plans" (credit card only, no cash and you pay the boat driver) We got the $16 each deal, good for 24 hours. We've had people tell us that it isn't as good as it used to be in that area.

This is a great spot if you are people watcher, duck watcher, or you like to see arts & merchandise, depending on what events are going on. There is also an area (off La Villita Village) with stage across the river that has music & other entertainment for certain events.
During special events it can be very crowded, the river walk is narrow, at these times maynot be wheelchair or stroller friendly. But some people manage it. During day & week day it may not be so crowded. It is usually more peaceful early morning.

Very fun, however if you are handicapped, be aware of the very few elevators available. Boats only run until about 8:45.

While we were in San Antonio this past spring, we visited the River Walk several times. It is lovely, with sidewalks winding along both sides of the river. There are tons of restaurants, hotels, and shops along the way. There are umbrella tables in certain locations, where you can rest and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are also many benches where you can sit and watch the ducks swim up and down the San Antonio River. One thing you should absolutely do is take one of the boat rides. The pilot of the boat fills you in on the history of the Walk, as well as some of the history of San Antonio. He or she will also talk about the many statues located along the River Walk. We went in the evening, when all the lights were on. What a beautiful location!

In our 3 day stay in San Antonio we went to the River Walk several times for dinner, drinks and to just walk around. The River walk extends for miles. It is a great place to exercise, walk, bike, take pictures as well as have a great margarita.
