Stayed in a suite with my family and loved it. Tons of space and comfort. Quiet relaxed atmosphere with a touch of history and charm. The grounds and main lobby have so much detail and style. The bar is something to be admired even if you don’t drink. Breakfast was amazing and the show we caught the evening of our stay was outstanding. Definitely a must if you are in Estes Park. Just wish we stayed longer.

The first thing to say is that this is a magnificent looking hotel and should be a wonderful place to stay, but our experience tells a different story. A litany of problems, starting with fairly trivial stuff but ending in a potentially massively expensive issue.
On arrival, just before normal check-in time of 3pm, we had to hang around for more than an hour until our room was made ready at 4pm. When we finally got our key we didn't appreciate having to fight our way past the guided ghost tour outside our room (a regular happening), nor did we think much of a faulty door lock, which on one occasion took a member of staff 10 minutes to open for us. The lack of air conditioning is a problem, which maybe could be excused because of the age of the property but does that apply to the squeakiest bed we've ever slept in or the shower that's either scalding or stone cold, or the frayed carpets or the hole in the ceiling stuffed with a tissue? And by the way, our travelling companions' TV didn't work.
On the plus side, dinner in the restaurant was good but breakfast was a problem. It's not buffet style, so we were asked to reserve a time slot and, having arrived at our allotted time, we then had to wait 45 minutes for our food order to be prepared. (A table of eight had apparently put the kitchen under enormous pressure!).
During our stay we lodged complaints and at final check out managed to have a sit-down with Greg, the Front-Desk Manager. He was friendly, apologetic and helpful and we accepted his offer of a discount on our two rooms. Our problems didn't stop there, however, because when we checked our credit card accounts, after the visit, we found that numerous unauthorised transactions had been applied to our cards, overcharging us by a total of $1700 for the two rooms.Nothing that two days of frequent phone calls and chasing couldn't sort out though! All in all, a shambolic stay at a hotel which could be a real gem if the owner put as much effort into maintaining the bedrooms as they do to their Disneyfication programme for the day trippers.
So, with apologies to some genuinely decent and hard working staff, my advice is, find alternative, sensibly priced accommodation locally, then pop across to the Stanley to admire its facade and historic features but don't waste your money on an overpriced, tired room.

Dear Mancman,
Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback in regards to your recent stay at The Stanley Hotel.
I sincerely apologize for the above challenges and we want to ensure we are able to investigate the unauthorized transactions, which have been applied to the credit card in question. To be able to properly follow-up I will need your hotel reservation information. If you could please contact the property and ask to speak with me, I will immediately take steps resolve any unauthorized transactions from the property and ensure engineering has addressed the above issues with the rooms, which you stayed.

Sincerely,

Greg Shaw
Assistant General Manager

Loved the charming hotel at Estes Park park which is a heritage property. Great as an experience of living in an old hotel which is colonial style. Unfortunately did not spend as much as I would have liked too. Great option for couples on account of its romantic setting.

It’s always a pleasure to stay at the Stanley Hotel, but especially so if you have never been to Estes Park. The majestic beauty is visible on the hill as soon as you drive into town, standing stark white against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. With the pop culture history of “The Shining” used as it’s theme, you will find the main hotel interspersed with references, photographs and souvenirs available for visitors. Enjoy a ‘Redrum’ latte or take a tour of the premises and visit the infamous Room 217. Our room (230) had a beautiful view of Lake Estes and the valley below. The Bacon Brothers (Kevin Bacon) were playing at the concert hall and we could hear the concert through our open windows. It’s worth paying extra to stay in the original building!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the lake

Thanks so much for the lovely review, Tracey! We are so grateful to have you as a returning guest and how wonderful that you got to enjoy the music of the Bacon Brothers when you were here. Indeed it was an awesome concert that only added to the atmosphere around property. We look forward to welcoming you back again for your next trip to Estes Park!

This is a very cool and unique property. The owners have done a great deal to keep the hotel's lobby, grand staircase, and dinning areas "historic" looking. There is lots of traffic through the hotel, which is a buzzing hub of tourists and diners in the Estes Park area. We attempted to go on the ghost tour but it was booked by the time we got there. *NOTE that people staying at the hotel still have to pay $20 pp for the tour, as opposed to the $23 the general public pays* The dining area and bar look neat, although we didn't take advantage of either. Instead, we bought our own bottle of wine and sat on the very grand looking front porch. The bar appears to have been modeled after the bar from the Shining.

The room itself was a standard 3-3 1/2 star room. It looked like the bathrooms had been remodeled recently, but my biggest gripes about the experience are that 1) the bathroom blinds didn't work; and 2) the water in the shower only trickled on hot.

We stayed at the Stanley because the hotel we originally reserved (Mary's Lodge) burned down about 7 hours before we were supposed to check in. The Stanley graciously gave us a 20% discount on our room when we booked as a result. The cost was still around $270, which, as I understand, is slightly more expensive than other places in the area.

In sum, not sure that I would pay to stay here again, but if in the Estes Park area, I would probably come back for a meal, a night cap, or a ghost tour.
