You can drive onto the beach! Very wide and obviously graded flat for even 2 wheel drive cars. Unfortunately it was very windy, so we didnt stay very long.

The visitor's center here was well worth the stop. The exhibits talk about how the hurricanes shift the shore line and how/why there is so much refuse along the shore (distributed there by winds and tides). There's also an observation deck for a better view of the Gulf as well as a covered deck providing shade for those of us not used to the heat/humidity of south TX. I could have stayed and watched the birds and listened to the surf for DAYS.

The only thing I would caution people about is that the white sand gets HOT!!! I have a service dog and I knew to be careful of his paws on the hot pavement. It didn't occur to me that the sand would be so hot but it was literally so hot that it blistered his paws. We ended up carrying him back to the car and leaving him there with the a/c running because of the damage to his feet. I'll know when I go back to make sure we have his boots with us (we live in MN so he wears boots to protect his feet in the winter) to protect his feet from the hot sand.

This beach is beautiful and breathtaking! The kids loved it so much! Watch out for snakes though, saw a rattlesnake on the trail and almost had a freaking heart attack! This beach sand is perfect for making sandcastles! It soft like talcum powder! Absolutely gorgeous at sunset!

Lovely stretch of gulf coast for a long walk Visitors center offers good information about the Ridley turtles that lay eggs each year and the conservation project to protect them. The island is part of the longest barrier island chain in the world. Many people there with families and fishing off the shore. Well worth the short drive. Short nature hike is not much close to the entrance of the park.
