Owner description: Muir Woods has a rich and varied history, from its use by the Coast Miwok people, to its early days of tourism and the Mount Tamalpais Mill Valley Scenic Railway, to an era of conservation, to modern preservation. In each era, the forest has been affected by the actions of humans, for better or for worse. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, this coastal redwood preserve features majestic redwoods and scenic hiking trails that draw more than 1.5 million visitors each year.

Excellent place to visit and take in the scenery, smells, and sounds of this amazing area. Some very good hiking trails, some are steep and long so bring water and snacks and allow enough time.

Be sure to reserve parking online before you get there as lots fill up quickly and reservation is required. Also there is lousy cell service when you get there so make sure to save the parking confirmation on device before you get there.

The Redwoods were one of the big items my teens wanted to see on our northern California vacation. Great park with nice hiking trails and good signage and information. We were here on a Wednesday morning and crowds seemed light, but had grown by afternoon when we left.

Trails are heavily wooded and are mostly shaded. We hiked the basic trail up the right side of Redwood Creek to Bridge 4, then crossed over and took the Hillside Trail back to Bridge 1 and the entrance, about a 2 mile loop. I have trouble with my knees going downhill (OK going up) and luckily the Hillside trail climbs steeper out by Bridge 4 but comes down more gradually toward Bridge 1.

I had purchased our parking permit well in advance with a 9 AM entrance, and we were able to get into a lot a short walk from the entrance. Again mid-week in mid-June probably helped with this. If planning on visiting check the website for important details on parking and shuttles.

If driving out, get your parking permit online ASAP, and have it with you (printed/phone), and I would suggest an early time to start before the crowds grow. They do not sell parking permits on-site, and there is no cell phone/WI-Fi service near the park.

A great place to hike and see the redwoods. The only concern is that you will not have cell service here if you use ATT. So, it is difficult to get Uber home.

We spent a happy 3 hours in Muir Wood. Most of this time was spent walking. As well as the regular loop via 4th bridge, we did the Canopy View/Fern Creek loop. That took us a brisk 1 hour 20 minutes.I

We travelled to Marin City (to pick up the Muir Wood shuttle) on the number 30 bus from San Francisco. We did not find it easy to identify the Golden Gate transit bus stops in SF. I recommend going to the Visitor Centre by Powell Street station and picking up a Golden Gate transit bus map. The staff will show you how to identify the bus stops.

A further tip, on the way out the bus stops for 4 minutes by a restroom in Sausalito. There is no restroom at Marin City!

First stop on our Pacific Coast Road tour. Highly recommend for families, couples or individuals. Please note you must reserve your parking place before your visit. We spent two hours walking the spectacular trails. We walked the easier trails but there are more strenuous trails for those needing such. Take time for a memorable hike in beautiful red wood forest.
