Owner description: Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

Our tour guide Pops was great and gave a informative background tour and was great at teaching us how to pan for gold. This place over Broken Boot by far!

We had a blast touring the mine and going out to the park for the claim mining! Everyone at the Big Thunder Gold Mine was so friendly and welcoming! Our gold mine tour guide Taye was the best!!! She is so full of knowledge at her ripe young age! I strongly suggest you take your family to the Big Thunder Gold Mine next time you visit Keystone SD!

We did the gold mine tour with Popps and he was full of information. It was great to get back into the nice cool cave on the hot day we where there. Lots of information and also loved the tour at the end going thru the old machines ect they let the kids pretend blow a charge. They had fun with that. We didn't do any panning as it was so hot out so not sure how that is. We got a coupon also from there for their restaurant that we went and visited. Alittle slow and out of food like bison burgers but from what they said it was their open house to that should improve. Prices were decent and food was decent.

small group and Jennifer was an excellent guide. Very interesting mining facts. So sad that miners would work so long and hard for so little. Learning about the mercury and it causing

We had a great time with Marcus and Ross during our 4 hour claim planning adventure. Both of our guides were very knowledgeable and wanted to make sure you found some gold. This is a must do if you are in the Black Hills!!
