Harvard Square is a very walkable and safe area. Great restaurants and historic sights galore. I would definitely recommend.

Nice walk around Harvard Square. The history of it and feeling of those minds that have passed through those halls of academia in almost 5 centuries and those to come. Amazing! (Oh, and they have a turkey.)

It's free to walk around and absorb almost 400 years of history. The buildings and atmosphere are impressive and there's lots of info available online and in travel guides. Parking is limited.

Boston has an excellent transportation system, the best of all free rides like the one I took from Logan International to Harvard. You go to ground transportation to take the Silver line and transfer to the Red subway line to many places. You can enjoy all the Harvard and MIT campuses plus many attraction between all at walking distances.
