Be sure to check the times on the website as this is only open afternoons.

We live about 2 hours away so we’ve done most of the main Lincoln sites several times. This overnight trip was to see the other places in Springfield and this was second on our list. The first being the GAR Museum.

We were greeted at the entrance and given information about the local national guard and the purpose of the museum and then we took a nice self guided tour through the exhibits. They were very interesting for us both as we love history and husband served in Vietnam.

It’s a donation system so no charges at the door. We spent a little over and hour going through it all.

I learned so much here. I like history and enjoy learning - never knew how much of a role Illinois played in history! Great trip for family (maybe not toddlers). Mostly indoor so great place to visit on a hot day. Doesn't open until later in the day so go after lunch. Lots of parking available (free). Self guided so you can stay as long, or little, as you'd like. We spent over an hour. No admission but they accept donations.
Lots of artifacts on display.

Great stop for the husbands and sons, ladies! Second floor of tastefully presented full motif thru the decades and war time weapons specific to each era with details and stories to captivate. Well done!

Ample parking at site just behind local army reserve station. Very knowledgeable staff guided us through the museum, which was bigger than I had ever imagined. Civil War through Vietnam. No snacks available for purchase.

The Illinois State Military Museum has an excellent collection of military history exhibits spanning the period from colonial America to the present day. They have many military items that are not found in other military museums, including an excellent firearms collection. One of their treasures is a brass10 barrel, .45 cal Gatling gun.
