“Lovely Townhouse in a lovely town”
Reviewed 3 February 2013 for a stay in December 2012

My husband, inlaws, my 7 year old, and I spent a week in La Marisol and hated to leave. It is very comfortable with 3 large bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. The stairs were a bit steep, which worried us at first, but my son took his time and it was fine. They also have gates if you have smaller children. The living area is large with TV with Intl channels. The kitchen is large, and we found everything we needed (pans, utensils, corkscrews) was supplied. Decent size fridge and freezer. The only problem we encountered was the dryer not working, but it wasn't a big deal. We never ran out of hot water even with dishwasher and 4 showers going on in the morning. The WiFi worked, a bit slow, but this isn't a large corporate Paris hotel either.
The Sunday market went from 8a-2pm and was just outside and covers the whole town. We bought good sausages, veggies, cheeses and breads. The market also had everything from soaps to clothes, antiques, and all kinds of homemade Provencal items. There is a Spar grocery store about a 3 or 4 minute walk (right next to the parking area) which is also handy. I loved the town, nice selection of shops/restaurants. Don't expect ANY form of nightlife though. My husband and I went looking for a bar about 11:00 at night and everything was closed! Oh well, it just forced us to have another bottle of wine at the house.

Management Response
22 Jul 2012
As an owner, it is impossible to vet potential guests to your home, but a degree of responsibility and care is assumed (as clearly published in the Terms & Conditions). Unfortunately for the first time in 3 years, I had to retain 40% from this party’s Damages Deposit due to extra costs incurred by their negligent actions and lack of thought. Only 30% of the actual costs incurred were retained, with all the rest being paid for by the Owner.

Prior to checkout, the sole complaint from this party was the WiFi connection (provided as a complimentary benefit), which due to the house’s location in the midst of town is not able to cope with up-to 7 people trying to connect simultaneously. As this appeared to be a problem, the party were informed of a 7 day internet café within 2 mins walk for any urgent work calls if necessary. Other complaints were only communicated after they were informed that a small amount of their damages deposit was being retained towards the costs of actual damage caused to the main access to the property, not for normal wear and tear.

The matter was thoroughly investigated with the management company and with their faultless reputation (looking after many rental properties in the area), I was completely satisfied that the responsibility, though not malicious, was due to this party’s negligence and complete lack of thought.

Value score 1 – For this oversized party of 10 people, Euros 110 per person for 7nts rental in this high-end rental property can only be considered good value.

Service score 1 - The management company did everything in their power (out of hours) to sort out the damages caused by this party. Solutions were found for alternative access and suggestions given for additional internet connection within 2 mins walk. The party were only asked to pay for 1/3 of the costs they actually incurred and the Owner paid for the rest. This score is very low for all the additional help they were given.

Comfort score 1 - All linen, towels and furnishings are very high quality according to all my former guests and there is no explanation as to why they have scored this so low.

Cleanliness score 2 - After every rental there is 4-5 hours of intensive cleaning and most guests compliment how spotless the property is on check-in. However, after this party departed, it took more than 8 hours to clean the property to get it back to the condition it had been on their check-in. Again no explanation given as to why this has been scored low.

la Marisol is correctly advertised as a traditional Provencal townhouse. Stairgates are provided for children and former guests (from babies to those in their 70s) have managed the 15 steep steps. This is not a fully serviced hotel and as a self-catering property, guests have full use of mops etc should they require after exuberant bathing.

They were directed on more than 6 occasions to the published Terms & Conditions referred to in their signed rental agreement. I found their assurance of the publication of a bad review (should I retain any part of their damages deposit), morally reprehensible, and could see no further point in correspondence with a party who simply refused to accept their liability.

I’m confident that a discerning reader will see this as a spiteful review from a party with no substantive argument nor any reason for grievance. It is very clear that every other review is diametrically opposite to theirs regarding rentals at la Marisol. For the first time I have been deeply disappointed by the actions of guests I welcomed to my home, but am certain this was just a very unlucky one-off. I look forward to welcoming back previous guests for their 3rd visit and have also gained bookings from friends of previous extremely satisfied guests.

“In the Heart of Town - but so quiet!”

Although La Marisol comes with a parking space, one could spend an entire week in this charming town house, doing something different every day, and never needing to drive somewhere! (We did take the car out, however, and found this location to be perfect for visiting other villages in Provence.) This beautiful place is in the heart of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, surrounded on all sides by neighbors, but you never see or hear them. We saw only the Courtyard Chat Noir, who shyly snoozed on the Chaise each day. We walked everywhere: to the open markets, to the supermarket, to wonderful restaurants, to the antique shops, and just around "the island". The ancient accommodations were wonderful, charming, beautifully - exquisitely! - decorated, and all "systems" were up to date and convenient. Rachel has done a marvelous job choosing the perfect location and outfitting La Marisol so that her guests have every convenience and comfort. A lovely place for a holiday. One caviate: the stairs might be tricky for someone not used to steep stairs - but we 70-somethings were fine!

“Perfect house”
Reviewed 16 May 2012 for a stay in May 2012

We just returned from a fabulous vacation, with a week spent in La Marisol. The house was very spacious and a superb choice for 2 couples and our adult daughter. The town is lovely and fun with very busy markets on Sunday and Thursday, and quieter other days. We had a car which made exploration of nearby towns and hiking trails easy; having a nearby dedicated parking spot was quite helpful. The house is even more lovely than the pictures show, with high quality, tasteful furnishings. By being tucked in the middle of the block behind other houses, it's very quiet and private. Buying food in the market, then cooking in the bright kitchen and on the grill, and then eating in the courtyard is relaxing and fun. Staying here made us feel part of the community. The house was immaculate, and we were welcomed with basic groceries in the fridge and a bunch of fresh flowers on the kitchen table. I would highly recommend this house.
