We rode the train all the way and back since it was part of our excursion. Our guide, Dakota Panning was fabulous! She provided us with a sparkling toast and some snacks at the summit. The skies were so clear that she said it’s never like this and we could see for miles! She told us all to switch sides so that other passengers could see the beautiful mountain valleys we pass on the way up and back so everyone can see/take photos. We got to see a Momma black bear and her two cubs on the way back! It was amazing. I Highly recommend doing this!

We stopped in Skagway as part of an Alaskan cruise. The train ride was great and included some amazing scenery as well as the opportunity to clearly see the hardships encountered by the prospectors during the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. This was just the starting point of the miner's journey--after trekking 1 year's worth of supplies to the top of the pass they still had 500 miles of travel to the Klondike area.
The railway is well maintained and offers historical narration during the trip. It is also one of the most scenic train rides in the world. I highly recommend it.

Tour seems more profit-oriented than memorable experiences oriented. Started 45 minutes late and individual ticket holders got to sit in the first two cars behind the locomotives, which was like sitting behind a bus stuck in a tunnel. Fumes were eyewatering. Opportunities for photographs were limited to a small outdoor platform large enough for two people on a side. This could be done much better by making the cars open for more photo opportunities. So, if you're using this opportunity to see something other than a cruise port, by all means take it. Great vistas, interesting history but expect a cattle car experience with guides walking down the aisles giving you an opportunity for tips or trying to sell you ballcaps and DVDs of the experience you couldn't photograph yourself. I cannot recommend this for the cost.

The train ride hear is very good but since we did it on our last visit, we just stayed in town. The town is an easy walk from the cruise dock. We headed to Reid falls and the old cemetery which is about 1&1/2 miles from town. You can walk or catch a local bus. The cemetery is right near the parking lot and beautiful Reid falls is just a short hike up the trail. Also in town there are lots of shops and restaurants to enjoy.

There is only one railroad out of southeast Alaska. This is it. See the view that the Klondike gold seekers had to walk to reach the gold fields. You can stand on the platforms between the cars to take your pix. Don't miss if you reach Skagway!
