We came to the Sheraton hotel for my wife's birthday for a staycation as we live on the big island and have stayed here before.
The gentleman at the front desk named JoJo was more than kind when I told of my wife's birthday he upgraded us from partial ocean view to full ocean front! Thank you so much for all your kindness!

This place is stunning. We loved everything about it! Our room was right over the water and watching the manta rays every evening was breathtaking. The pools and rooms are beautiful with such lovely and accommodating staff. Special mention to all the concierge staff. All were amazing and so helpful with recommendations.
We attended the Luau at the resort which was so much fun. Short distance from town with stunning views from all angles.

My family and I recently stayed at the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keahou Bay. The grounds are beautiful and we had a lovely stay. It was definitely an experience and treat to watch beautiful manta rays swimming in their natural habitat so close by. Special thanks to Houkalani who exemplified professionalism and customer service while assisting us with our room accommodations. We really appreciate her thoughtfulness and consideration.

Our room was ocean front and huge! My closet is not that big at home!! Loved sitting on the balcony and watching the manta rays in the evening and going to sleep with the sound of the ocean waves hitting just below our room. Rays on the Bay restaurant had good food...but the wait was horrible. Didn't know we had to have a reservation the evening we checked in. A beautiful hotel...only 2 restaurants and the 1 huge pool...but worth every penny we paid.

Let's start with the good. When we arrived, the driveway was lovely with greater service, but the lobby is better, 5 star, with views over the coastline. We checked in at midday and our room was ready to go, so thumbs up for quick housekeeping, or maybe dumb luck with occupancy being low. The walk to the rooms showed off a very promising resort with a beautiful pool that wraps around the entire complex and has an integrated water slide for kids (perfect for our 8 and 11 year olds).

When we got the ocean view room we were greeted with a very spacious room that was a little dated but was working hard to keep up appearances. The balcony off the main living space was huge and had a gorgeous view of the coast line.

After being on a flight we were all excited to get some lunch and let the kids get into the pool which they loved.

That first night we had dinner at the resorts "Rays on the Bay" which was wonderful and we got to see these magnificant creatures in their natural environment.

Sounds like bliss doesn't it?

Well here is the but.

Whilst everything above is true, scratch the surface and things start to fall apart and leave you very dissapointed.

The rooms, whilst they are large, only come in a king single, or two doubles. There is no queen option which makes two adults sleeping in a bed together a daily tussle that leaves you sleep deprived and angry.

The magnificant pool that wraps around the complex, this is only 4ft deep, so when the tempreture is 100 outside, the pool is often as hot in it as it is out of it. This makes cooling off impossible and frustrating.

The only other option is for a beatuful dip in th ocean, but the resort doesn't have its on beach or private access to the water. The best you can hope for is a walk down the road near a boat ramp to dive in off the rocks. Whilst we did do this, i urge everyone to be careful as my son ended up with a sea urchin in his foot after only 5 mins of being in the water. (Thank you to the lovely security guy for the vinegar!!!!).

The bathrooms are ok in size, but they are dated and in need of some pretty major upgrades in the years to come.

The balcony is in desperate need of some care and a little bit of styling. There are two chairs and a small circle table clumsily placed in this huge area. Sheraton, please!!! make this a place to sit! Get a nice sun lounge or day bed out there, a corner lounge and let people sit and enjoy the views!!

I found strange the card system that works on the resort which sees you allocated one card per person for beach towels. You hand the card in, you get a towel and when you are finished you bring it back. However, if you lose your beach towel, well that will cost you $25.00. A little steep considering it is written that if towels are left on pool chairs for too long they'll be taken....another $25.00. Anywho, i'm sure there is a reason for this as there seemed to be a lot of local time share residents using the pool facilities on weekends.

Moving on, we have receaction shop which hands out the towels and basketballs (yes wonderful brand new basketball courts) and snorkling fins and goggles. I was surprised when i was asked to pay $33.00 per day for a mask, fins and a snorkle, something i would expect should be included in the resort fees. Afterall, they give you complimentary golf clubs to play at the local course if you so choose. Pricey!!!

Just across from the recreaction shop in the pool side bar which serves food. I was deperate to love this place because we could keep an eye on the kids and it was easy to image my wife and i having an afternoon cocktail there.

However, this was not meant to be. The only day we ate there was a weekend and they had one serving staff member for all tables and one behind the bar. There must have been 100 people eating at tables and from what i can assume now, 90% of them weren't from the resort. Service took 30 mins to find it's way to our table, then another 30-35 mins before food and drinks for the kids was served. The quantitity was massive, but it was average at best and for the price..... we gave it a miss for the rest of our stay.

Whilst we were at the resort, we noticed quite a number of times stray cats wandering through the resort and probably more concerning, the Rays on the Bay restaurant. These cats from what I'm told are cared for by the hotel, but are stray. Not really the kind of professional setting expected from a Sheraton and a classy style restaurant.

There is a kids entertainment room, but we refused to let the kids go back in there after concerns for their health. It was not well ventillated at all, no aircon and was a dirty place to be. In a tropical climate and under the Sheraton brand? I'd expect a lot more than this.

Check-out was quick and easy, I think because, well there was no recpetion there to check us out. We had a to call a number and check out over the phone which i found a little impresonal given we'd just spent 5 nights with the resort.

In short, this is a very visually appealing resort, but it's missing the finishing touches and is strategically flawed by it's 4ft pool. It's quite a way out of Kona itself and whilst there is a trolly, hire a car and do yourself a favour.

Room Tip: If you are a family with teenage kids, book two interconnecting rooms and get the king bed!
