It’s all lovely scenery but our favourite walk was up to the Pfitscher-Joch hut just over the Italian border. It’s a lovely mountain trail rather than following a service road up to the most famous hut. The views from the hut are magnificent and the minestrone soup was delicious

As with all towns in a valley, the walking tends to be either up or down the sides or along tha valley ( either on the flat or part way up the sides). There is however a good range from Mayerhofen particularly if the cable cars are also utilised.

We walked 18,000-22,000 per day there were more hard core 60+ year olds covering longer distances. I have never seen the sound of music but might do now. The roaming cattle and their bell, crystal lakes, waterfalls. So pure. Wish I had got some hiking sticks they were a bit pricy there.

During our stay at hotel das Zillergrund in Mayrhofen we did a hike to the peak of Ahorn. We started from our hotel to the gondola (bergbahn). After arriving at the mountain station we started the hike towards the Edelhütte. This takes approx. 1 hour. From the Edelhütte you have to climb almost 700 meters to the peak at 2.978 mrt. It will take you around 2 hours. The last part is very steep but worth it as you arrive at the peak (the second one with a cross at the top). The descend will take you almost 2,5 hrs. Be aware that the last gondola departs at 5 p.m.

The walking around Mayrhofen is beautiful. We have walked in Scheffau, Saalbach, Kaprun and a few other places in Austria and so far this is our favourite.
