Great lake and simple beach area. Beautiful rock formations to swim to. Great hiking trails all around.

Lovely man-made lake in Custer State Park is a must-see. Swimming, kayaking, fishing and strolling are all top activities here. Don’t miss the vigorous “Sunday Gulch” hiking trail.

I fell in love as soon as we got out of the car and to the lake. We stopped by in the evening and decided to come back the next day. We hiked all around the lake. What beauty. Was a lot fewer people the evening before, but that was ok. Plenty of beauty to be shared.

We were very disappointed at first when we drove in as it was totally packed (right around lunchtime) and we had no idea it was that popular! We couldn't find parking for awhile but eventually found a spot on the side of a road. There were people crawling EVERYWHERE... in the lake, all around the lake, on the rocks in the lake, etc. Fortunately, we decided to eat lunch and then give it a chance even with all the people. And lo and behold, as soon as we began walking the trail and heading towards the "back" of the lake, there were hardly any people! We decided to hike all the way around with our group of 8 adults and 8 kids (ages 1.5 yrs to 12 yrs), and boy, was it worth it! The hike was the highlight for many of us. Such neat views to take in, and the hike was fun while not being overly challenging. We loved it!

Hiking, yes. Canoeing, yes. Swimming, not at the time we were there due to high bacteria. gift shop, yes. We hiked the trail around the lake. Rated Easy, but some older couples (+75) had problems. Parking was wherever you could park. Once the lot was full, then the overflow parked on the side of the road.
