We chose this hotel for its excellent location and its venerable history in New Orleans. The location is fantastic right on the St. Charles streetcar line near Josephine street. The history is apparent everywhere. The hotel bills itself as being “re-imagined”.

The positives: Everyone at the front desk was amazing! Greeting, professional, friendly, and pleasant.

It is difficult to describe the style of the rooms. Our two room suite was a cross between shabby chic and plain old shabby—maybe trying to be retro but ending up missing the mark. In our suite, two old Brownie cameras sat on a shelf...would have been cool if they weren’t battered and looking like they were taken from a trash can. The sofa was not a remake of a classic line but, apparently, the original...very low slung, difficult to sit in, no support and covered in gold velvet/velour. The TV surround was painted black but it was apparent (by the edges) that it was done hastily or unprofessionally as the edges were not cleanly painted. The indoor/outdoor grade carpeting was ragged along the baseboards, again, not cleanly cut. When the wind blew (and it does, indeed!) the windows rattled frantically. A nice sized working space and good WiFi helped make the suite better.

The hallways were quite dim making it difficult to find the keyhole in the door (old fashioned keys, not key cards).

Two bottles of generic water were supplied at the first day but never refreshed unless one wanted to pay the $7 per bottle for the FIJI water.

The bathroom was small and probably one of the least favorite parts of the room. Black paint on the top half, again, poor and ragged edges along the lines, topped pale, small subway-style tiles. No makeup mirror, no soap dish in the shower/tub or grab bar, and a 5-and-dime plastic shower liner left much to be desired.

The king bed was comfortable but the bedding was marginally good..perhaps because of the VID but not luxe. Bed lamps for reading were 3-way but only the middle position worked so not great for reading in bed. A small fridge held anything we brought back but had nothing in it otherwise.

The not-so-good: The restaurants and bars are apparently not affiliated with the hotel so you cannot make a reservation at the front desk or charge to your room. Even for drinks in the Hot Tin roof bar, reservations must be made. We came in after dinner one night and wanted to order a drink to take to our room and were told there was a wait list to get in! Bars & restaurants & the Cafe are only open Wed-Saturday at this time due to the VID.

My biggest problem was NO coffee available in the hotel until the Silver Whistle Cafe opened at 7 AM (which was only opened Wednesday-Sunday from 7-11 AM) We asked where we could get coffee and were told that there was no where else. No in room coffee makers? No room service? We are early risers from the East Coast time zone and like to leisurely enjoy coffee and reading in the morning. Flying out early without coffee was not a great experience, either.

The gentlemen at the front doors were oblivious to guests needs. It seemed their job was to park cars—period. Doors were not opened or held for incoming or outgoing guests, names or faces were never remembered in spite of staying several days.

Perhaps the Pontchartrain has seen better days.

Dear pamgoes,

Thank you for your feedback! I would like to apologize that your room did not meet your expectations, however I am happy to hear that our staff was welcoming and friendly, and that you enjoyed the location of the hotel! We hope that should your travel plans bring you back to New Orleans, you will give us a 2nd chance, as we are currently working on expanding the hours of the F&B outlets to be more accommodating.

All the best,
Mark Hirsch

We had a great time staying at the Pontchartrain Hotel! The father/daughter duo at the front desk of Jerry & Brittany were the sweetest! In fact all the staff were lovely! Location was perfect with the streetcars right across the street and Magazine St just a few minutes walk.

We also had a visitor stop by our 10th floor room, maybe to say goodbye the night before we left. Woke up at 4am to the chandelier right above our bed turned on and the dinner turned all the way up. We fell asleep in pitch black room. Looked up haunting & Pontchartrain on google and true to form for New Orleans, this is not an unusual experience...

Highly recommend!!

We spent a spring week in New Orleans, as we've wanted to stay in the Garden District for some time. This Pontchartrain delivered, and is the charmer on St Charles Avenue. Compared to what I saw around there.

Facilities are almost 100 years old so be aware of that, but the standards are good and the service is excellent. The Avenue can be a little loud at times so if you have a front of house room I think that could be an issue for some folks.

There is a great bar and kitchen in house, although the Jack Rose is not the finest food in town it is a good ambience for a date night for sure.

The Hot Tin rooftop bar for drinks and appetizers was amazing.

Great beds, Good facility. If you want historic, good location for walks to Magazine Street restaurants and jaunts on the Street Car system. You have found your match.

Room tip: a back of hotel, city view to splurge a bit

First visit to this hotel and was not disappointed. Old-school finishes but renovated to modern standards. Staff very nice and helpful - Britteny at the front desk; Keron at the valet stand. When the pandemic is over, and the hotel fully opens, it will even be that much better. Thank you all for a great trip!
